What Are The 6 Core Courses In The Ib Program
To earn the full IB Diploma, you have to take courses from six subjects, one each from groups 1-5, and either one from group 6 or a substitute from groups 1-4:
- Group 1: Studies in Language and Literature
- Group 2: Language Acquisition
- Group 3: Individuals and Societies
- Group 4: Sciences
- Group 5: Mathematics
- Group 6: The Arts
Between three and four subjects must be taken at the Higher Level and the rest at the Standard Level in order to earn the Diploma. Higher Level courses are more challengingIB recommends a minimum of 240 hours of instructional time for HL courses, and 150 hours for SL courses.
Some schools handle the HL requirements by having students take the SL or AP version of a course first and the HL version second, thereby forming a two-year sequence. For example, you might take AP English Literature as a junior, and then HL IB English as a senior.
Also, note that many high schools with IB programs have recommended four-year plans to help students fit in all the requirements, since there’s a lot to keep track of. Therefore, you won’t necessarily have to do a bunch of schedule-planning on your own.

Congratulations class of 2022!
Our graduating Grade 12 students endured coronavirus conditions for the entirety of their two-year IB Diploma Programme and High School Graduation studies. All of our eighty-eight graduating students achieved their high school diplomas. Eighty-three students entered for the IB Diploma Programme assessments, and seventy-seven achieved their IB diplomas, with thirty-two Bilingual Diplomas awarded. Fourteen students achieved 40 or more points, including one who achieved a maximum of 45 points. Our students average of 34 points is above this years reported preliminary global average of 31.98 points.
We are very proud of the achievements of our students and their teachers, counsellors, mentors and parents. We wish our graduates all the best as they make their next steps.

What Is Ib An Overview
The International Baccalaureate program was designed in Switzerland in the 1960s. Its purpose was to give students around the world a chance to earn a rigorous, internationally recognized diploma, which they could then use for entry into universities.
To earn an IB Diploma, you have to go to an IB-approved school and meet the requirements, which include taking classes in the six subject groups, passing the IB exams, and completing three additional core requirements.
But what if you don’t want to do the Diploma? It’s also possible to take a few IB classes without doing the full-blown Diploma Programme, though each high school has its own policy on this.
What Are The Benefits Of The Ib Program
One of the chief benefits of the IB program is that it provides academic preparation for college. IB courses are known for being interdisciplinary, requiring a good deal of independent thinking, and assigning oral presentations and original researchall characteristics of college courses.
Spoiler alert: college-level research involves a bit more work than just Googling something.
Especially if you earn the full IB Diploma, your IB courses will be a great way of showing that you have taken tough courses in a range of subjects, from math to English to history to science, and are able to manage college-level coursework.
As we discussed before, colleges want to see that you’ve taken the most advanced classes available to you. And taking IB is a great way to do just that.
In addition to getting preparation for college, you can get credit for college classes by passing IB exams. Again, you don’t need to complete the full IB Diploma to earn credit, so if you don’t think you can fit the IB Diploma into your schedule, it might still benefit you to take a few individual IB classes.
Unfortunately, taking an IB exam isn’t cheap. There’s a $119 fee per exam. While this is a lot of money, it’s still much less than the tuition you would pay for the same intro-level college course.

The growth of IB programs in Ontario led a group of 12 independent and public schools to establish IB Schools of Ontario in 1999. Since its beginning IBSO pursued its goals of working with Ontario schools to strengthen IB programmes in the province together with supporting the aims of IBO. The Ib’s Four Programs
In the Primary Years Programme , the IBs youngest students learn about and use knowledge, concepts and skills from a variety of subjects to explore six transdisciplinary themes and begin to develop the attributes of the learner prole.
The Middle Years Programme is a challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world and culminates in a personal project. Students who complete the MYP are well prepared to undertake the IB Diploma Programme.
In the final two years of high school, students can choose to enter either:
- the Diploma Programme , a curriculum which emphasiz-es both breadth and depth of knowledge. The DP is made up of six subject groups and a core, comprising theory of knowledge , creativity, activity, service and a re-search paper of up to 4,000 words, the extended essay
- or, the Career-related Programme . The CP is combines two IB diploma courses with school-based, career-related study. It equips students to pursue further education or to enter their chosen career path immediately.

From Prek To Graduation
For children ages 3 to 12, IB focuses on six themes: who we are, where we are in place and time, how we express ourselves, how the world works, how we organize ourselves, and sharing the planet. Students examine these ideas through a variety of prisms, by considering works that focus on language, social studies, math, arts, science, and personal, social, and physical education.
The interdisciplinary approach continues in the Middle Years Program for students ages 11 to 16. Since this program doesnt align perfectly with U.S. middle school ages, students may complete their Middle Years studies during their sophomore year of high school. At the end, students do a personal project that usually springs from the students interests. At one California high school, projects have included a board game, a skateboarding video, and a self-help book for teens. At Yonkers, one student interested in forensics created a murder scene.
To earn their IB diploma, seniors write a 4,000-word essay on a topic of their choice. The senior project is designed to prepare graduating seniors for college-level research and writing. Recently, seniors at Yonkers tackled such topics as the ordination of women in the Catholic Church, the U.S. debts impact on the countrys role as a world power, and the effect of social media on teenagers. A local adult supervises, but the final essays are sent to outside examiners who grade the work using criteria that apply to IB students around the world.
May 2020 Examination Results
In March 2020, the IB announced that exams for the May 2020 session had been canceled as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It claimed that the final grades would instead be calculated based on course work, students’ teacher-predicted grades, and historic school data. “Prior to the attribution of final grades, this process was subjected to rigorous testing by educational statistical specialists to ensure our methods were robust. It was also checked against the last five years sets of results data,” an IB spokesman said. In July 2020, the IB released its results for Diploma Programme and Career-related Programme candidates enrolled in the May 2020 session. Over 17,000 signatories signed an online petition calling for a clarification of the grading methodology, and for free remarking and retesting. Several educators have criticized IB’s approach to the 2020 grading.The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation stated it would “scrutinize” the grades. The Norwegian Data Protection Authority asked the IB to provide data under the General Data Protection Regulation.
Some argued that using a school’s historical data to produce grades was unfair to black or low-income students, or students from smaller schools. Others complained about the lack of transparency and fair process of the grades’ appeal process.
