What Do Colleges Think Of Ib And Ap

IB vs AP | My experiences with International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement

As it turns out, colleges don’t automatically consider AP or IB harder or more impressive on a transcript. Since IB is a rarer program, they can’t penalize students for not taking it. Plus, there are huge differences in how both AP and IB courses are taught and graded at high schools across the country.

Because of the differences in IB/AP course grading, collegesespecially the most selective onesjust want to see that you have taken the most challenging course load available at your school. So instead of worrying about AP versus IB, you should worry about taking the most rigorous classes your high school offers.

For example, Princeton says on its admissions website, “Whenever you can, challenge yourself with the most rigorous courses possible, such as honors, Advanced Placement , and dual-enrollment courses. We will evaluate the International Baccalaureate , A-levels, or another diploma in the context of the program’s curriculum” .

Princeton is more interested in how hard your schedule is considered at your school rather than whether you chose AP or IB.

So if your high school just has APs, then you should take some AP classes. If your high school has just the IB program, you should take some IB classes or, even better, go for the diploma. If your high school has both, you can take a mix.

Advice From An Expert: Is International Baccalaureate Right For Me

Dr. Robert Bouressa is the Director of College Guidance for Saint Andrews School in Boca Raton, FL. He is the former Diploma Coordinator for IB Students at Saint Andrews, and now counsels IB students on college choice. Prior to joining the school, he spent 10 years as the Director of Admission and College Counseling and worked within the IB program at the Escola Americana do Rio de Janeiro.

What Is The International Baccalaureate Organization

The International Baccalaureate Organization was founded in 1968, and it is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. The IB Diploma Programme for high school upperclassmen was the first program offered by the organization. It was followed by three others, including the Middle Years Programme for 11- to 16-year-olds and the Primary Years Programme for students ages 3 to 12. In 2012, the Career-Related Programme, the fourth and last IB program, debuted. This program, like the IB Diploma Programme, is for high school students. Because few high schools in the United States offer it, however, this article will focus only on the IB Diploma Programme. For more information about other IB programs, explore this website.

In addition to standard coursework, students will also supplement their educational experience with three additional components:

  • Theory of Knowledge
  • Extended Essay
  • Creativity, Action, Service

The theory of knowledge requirement focuses on building critical thinking skills across all subjects. The extended essay requirement involves independent research and extended study on one particular subject area. And the creativity, action, and service requirements are designed to build interpersonal skills by pairing community involvement alongside academic studies.

Why Should You Take Ib Classes Or Pursue An Ib Diploma

On top of the opportunity for college credit, I truly think the IB program is the best preparation for collegeeven better than the community college classes I took in a dual enrollment program. IB prepares students to think globally and write about a variety of topics. I really believe in the IB program.

It provides students with more creative opportunities than do AP classes. Students are allowed to choose topics for their reports and are not typically assigned a specific area to research.

For example, I am very passionate about film and theatre. I got to explore that passion through my Extended Essay, and I also got to explore it in my oral presentation for my Spanish B class, in which I talked about Pedro Almodovar and Spanish cinema.

Also, I am very interested in my family history. As I mentioned. I wrote a report on Allied prisoners of war in Europe in WWII for my IB history class. My own grandfather was a prisoner of war. I got to track down details of his experiences and include it in my report.

Overall, IB is a fantastic program for students who love to read and learn about the world. It truly allows students to pursue their biggest interests and identify their passions.

What To Look For In An Ib School

If you are considering an IB school, find out what form of IB it offers. If its a school within a school and/or students are allowed to take IB classes without pursuing an IB diploma, ask how the program works for students at different levels of participation. How will student schedules align for academics, lunchtime, and breaks, for example, and what options do students have if they have trouble acclimating to IB classes? Schools offer different classes to meet IB requirements, so find out which foreign languages, arts, and electives are available. Also, some IB programs have GPA or testing requirements for admission, so youll need to determine whether your child can meet them.

Depending on how the program is financed in your district, students may need to pay for their own tests. For example, students might be asked to pay a one-time fee of $172 plus $119 for each IB high school exam they take. Pursuing an IB diploma often costs hundreds of dollars.

IB is not a magic bullet. Like any program, its success hinges on the general school atmosphere and the quality of teachers, students, and facilities, so be sure to look at the whole package.

An Ap Course Is Not Required To Take An Ap Exam

Whats Cooking – 05/01/2022 – Galette Des Rois

To register for an IB exam, a student must be enrolled in and complete an IB course. Students who want to take an AP exam, on the other hand, are not required to complete the AP course associated with that test.

That said, most schools do not advise students to take an AP exam without enrolling in the corresponding AP course. The AP course is designed to prepare students to do well on the exam.

Ib Vs Ap: What’s The Same

Both the AP and IB programs allow you to take a challenging course followed by an exam that you can earn college credit for. In some schools, they’re even the same course .

AP and IB are generally the most challenging courses available to high school students. Unless you’re able to sign up for local college courses or do advanced independent projects and research, AB and IB are likely the best way for you to begin preparing for college.

The Three Core Elements Of The Ib Are:

  • Theory of knowledge in this timetabled interdisciplinary course students investigate knowledge, the process of learning, how we know what we know, and who determines what we know to be true it helps students think critically about the types of knowledge they are constructing in their selected subjects, enhancing critical thinking and metacognition. Theory of Knowledge has two assessment tasks: an internally marked exhibition of objects that relate to their exploration of a knowledge question, and an externally marked essay.
  • Extended essay this independent, self-directed piece of research is channelled into a 4,000-word paper, and gives students the skills to question, think deeply, critically analyse and formulate opinions.
  • Creativity, activity, service students complete projects related to physical activity, creative pursuits and community service, contributing to their health and well-being and their development as well-rounded and community-minded citizens.

In addition to the three core elements students also choose courses from the following six subject groups:

  • Studies in language and literature
  • Language acquisition
  • The arts

Unfortunately, these exams are not free. Students must pay $172.00 to register for the exam period and an additional $119.00 per subject test. Students who are typically eligible for fee waivers should talk to their IB coordinators or guidance counselors to learn about the possibility of reduced or free testing.

The History Of Ib Schools

What

The IB diploma was developed by teachers at the International School of Geneva. These teachers created an educational program for students who moved internationally and who wanted to attend a university. The early project was concentrated on developing an educational program to prepare students for college or university and creating a set of exams that these students would need to pass to attend universities. Most of the early IB schools were private, but now half of the worlds IB schools are public. Arising from these early programs, the International Baccalaureate Organizationfounded in 1968 and based in Geneva, Switzerlandoversees over 900,000 students in 140 countries. The United States has over 1,800 IB World Schools.

The mission statement of the IB reads as follows: The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

Only Ib Requires You To Enroll In Classes

You can take AP exams without being enrolled in an AP class, but you must be enrolled in an IB class to be able to take an IB exam. If you have proficiency in a language that’s not offered by your school or you want to self-study for a niche subject such as art history, then the AP program will give you more flexibility.

AP is a good option for students who like to study on their own.

Additionally, IB offers higher-level and standard-level courses. To get an IB diploma, you have to take at least three higher-level courses. AP courses are offered at a single level, though there are certain subjects, such as calculus and physics, that have different course options.

IB higher level is, at some high schools, considered harder than AP. Most colleges give credit for AP exams and higher-level IB exams, but not all give credit for standard-level IB exams.

You can search the AP credit policy of various colleges at the AP college database. The IB program doesn’t have a similar database, but you can look up the IB credit policy of any college or university by searching ” IB credit.”

You might be attracted to the IB program’s focus on writing and a broad education, or you might think the AP program’s flexibility makes it a better choice for you. Definitely take these differences into account as you make your choice.

But what do colleges think? Does one program have a reputation for being more rigorous?

Outcomes Of Ib Classes

In addition to university readiness, DP students are also more likely to persist at university . A study conducted by IB and SRI Education found that DP graduates in the United States experienced more positive postsecondary enrollment, persistence, and graduation rates than the average American high school student.

An earlier study found that students that received the full IB Diploma were 35% more likely to enroll in higher education, and 40% more likely to graduate from a four-year institution than the average American high school student.

Longer-Term Outcomes

While many students focus on more immediate outcomes of the IB program, the benefits extend far past university. A global study of IB alumni found that the IB has the potential to powerfully shape the lives of the students who participate in its programs.

A majority of former IB students in the study reported experiencing profound and long-lasting effects. These are consistent with the goals of the IB Learner Profile, a roadmap for student development. Examples of these longer-term impacts include:

  • the development of international-mindedness
  • positive dispositions towards lifelong learning

You get a series of questions and record your answer after a given amount of prep time. ~1 min for JPM I think

  • 4

They asked me questions like: walk me through an M& A deal that you found interesting? Do you expect the S& P 500 to be higher, lower, or the same in a year and why do you think that?

  • 47

This line of questions are after the hire the right? Everyone is telling me hirevue is all behavioral.

  • 4

I couple firms do HireVue so I can’t remember which specific questions from JPM but I do remember those two from one of the HireVue’s I did. Thought it was going to be all behavioral and they slipped in those questions. Which I guess are kind of behavioral.

Core Requirements And Subject Groups

Theory of knowledge Creativity, action, service

To be awarded an IB diploma, candidates must fulfill three core requirements, in addition to passing their subject examinations:

Subject groups

Students who pursue the IB diploma must take six subjects: one each from Groups 1â5, and either one from Group 6 or a permitted substitute from one of the other groups, as described below. Three or four subjects must be taken at Higher level and the rest at Standard level . The IB recommends a minimum of 240 hours of instructional time for HL courses and 150 hours for SL courses.

While the IB encourages students to pursue the full IB diploma, the “substantial workload require a great deal of commitment, organization, and initiative”. Students may instead choose to register for one or more individual IB subjects, without the core requirements. Such students will not receive the full diploma.

The six IBDP subject groups and course offerings are summarised below. More information about the subject groups and individual courses can be found at the respective subject group articles:

Environmental Systems and Societies SL is an interdisciplinary course designed to meet the diploma requirements for groups 3 and 4, while Literature and Performance SL meets the requirements of Groups 1 and 6.

Factors To Consider When Comparing Ib Schools Or An Ib And A Non

If you’re comparing two or more IB DP schools or an IB School with a non-IB school, I recommend emailing the IB coordinator at each school and asking for the following:

  • The school’s IB Diploma Rate however, this should not be the be-all and end-all. According to one IB coordinator, “IB allows schools to not count some students’ scores, so the school will not drop the student in order to help their percentage.” So, the rate may not be reflective of the whole school’s performance.
  • What the admission criteria for their IB Programme is. Usually, this differs from the high school’s overall admission criteria.
  • The overall graduation rate.
  • How many graduates are headed to four-year colleges/universities.

You should also look at how long they have been an IB School . You can find this information on the IB school page .

If you’re comparing an IB school to a non-IB school, email someone in the administration at the non-IB school and ask for the following information:

  • Overall graduation rate
  • How many graduates are headed to four-year colleges/universities
  • Admission criteria

The answer to these questions are important, and if the IB coordinator/administrator is not willing to answer them, you should be wary of the school.
