Covid: 1: We Told Her The Ib Results Would Be Fair

Then the pandemic hit and she was devastated at not being able to sit the exams and having the opportunity to reap the benefits of her dedicated studies.

We assured her that the IB results for 2020 would be fair and that her dream would not be shattered, believing that there would be leniency in such a difficult time!

We were not prepared for the shock of results that had nothing in common with Paulas consistent performance during the past two years.

She kept saying: These are not my results!

Due to what was first called an algorithm and then standardised grades, my daughter dropped 6 points and no longer had the grade in Chemistry she needed to qualify for medicine at her two elected universities. She now faces no place in any university and having to start all over again.

As widely reported in the UK, Paulas case is hardly unique and particularly affects Science and Maths candidates in smaller schools, as well as students in the 37 to 42 point brackets in other word: top achievers!Small schools appear to have been particularly disadvantaged too.

The algorithm/standardised grades system has not been fully made public, so no-one is clear as to why these students have been affected in this way. IBOs consistent claim in a universal press statement is that the process was fair and robust. There has been no acknowledgement that any children have been disadvantaged.

Why Does It Take So Long To Grade Ap Tests

While AP scores coming out online saves some time, why does it take the College Board two months to grade AP exams when you can get your SAT scores after just a few weeks?

The reason for this is that it takes a long time to grade free-response questions. Although the multiple-choice sections are graded by a computer, free responses aren’t graded until the annual AP Reading conference in June.

This event is basically a huge conference where thousands of high school teachers and college professors gather to grade all the free-response sections on AP tests. The AP Reading usually lasts about two weeks. Since it doesn’t start until June , this makes the AP scoring process take longer.

This is an actual picture from the 2013 Reading conference for AP Studio Art. Each portfolio is looked at by more than seven graders! Read more here if you’re curiousabout what happens during grading.

Once the conference is done, the College Board must work quickly to combine the free-response scores with the multiple-choice scores this process involves weighing and then scaling them to the final 1-5 scoring scale. Readers have just two weeks to do all of this before final AP scores are posted online in July.

Even though the entire scoring process takes two months, it’s actually quite a feat for more than four million AP exams to be graded by real people every single year!

How Do You Think The Last Few Months Will Change Assessment Practices For Ib Programmes Moving Forward

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has been keenly felt across all sectors, but education has been one of the most significantly impacted. Not only have schools all over the world had to find new ways to continue teaching, but with examinations cancelled, students future steps have been at the forefront of everyones minds. The IB recently celebrated 50 years of education and, as we look to the next 50 years, we have been thinking about the role of examinations in education. COVID-19 has affirmed that these considerations are valuable and has provided us with an opportunity to open out these conversations further.

What Happens If I Do Not Get The Results I Want

University offers are often dependent different factors for example, its possible to score the required overall grade but not the required grades for your HL subjects. So, its important to read your original offer requirements carefully so you know where you stand. Seek advice from your chosen university, and in many cases, they can decide to accept you anyway.

The university may wait until after A Level and other results days before deciding on your place, so youll need to be patient. Alternatively, the university may let you know that they will not be holding your place. If so, you need to speak to your second-choice university if you have met their requirements.

If you are not offered the university place you want, you can consider getting your exams remarked. However, remember that your results can go down as well as up. You may prefer to retake some of your exams in November or next May your IB coordinator will be able to advise you the deadline for registering. Or, if applying to a UK university, you can enter the Clearing process.

Paula Wilcock, chief assessment officer for the International Baccalaureate Organisation said:

What Is A Good Ap Score

At most schools, the minimum score required for earning college credit is a 3 or 4 . But, bear in mind that some colleges dont award credit at all or only award it for select AP exams. Still, they might use your scores for placement purposes, such as in foreign language or math courses.

If you want to gauge how you did on the test compared to your peers, take a look at the percentage of test-takers who earned a 3 or above on these tests in the past, as per the charts below. This will give you insight into the strength of your performance.

What Do You Say To Students Who Are Disappointed Or Even Relieved That They Wont Sit For An Exam They Have Spent Two Years Studying For

I do understand that students will have all kinds of reactions, especially given the dangers and stress that so many of them are facing. What I would say to every one of them is that we are proud of what they have done and we are excited for what they will do next.

With or without the exam results, each one of you is a unique IB student who is well prepared for the next step in your future. No one can take away from you the work youve done, what you have learned and the kind of preparation youve been given as an IB studentwhether youve studied two years in the DP or CP or even more years in the MYP and PYP. All of that has been baked into you as a lifelong learnerwhether or not you would have sat for an exam in May.

I also believe that coming together during this crisisas it is doing for so many families, friends and communitieswill strengthen a lifetime bond that IB students share with one another. The international IB community is going to come through this shared hardship better equipped than ever to help the world meet its challenges in the coming years.

Its important to remember that universities are also adjusting to this new reality, and are trying to approach their usual decisions with a new degree of flexibility
