The fact that IBS is diagnosed after ruling out other diseases does not always lead to a strong feeling of confidence in the diagnosis. This uncertainty might lead you to be vigilant for any unusual physical symptoms that may indicate a more serious condition.
A common practice is to compulsively check the color and appearance of each bowel movement. The problem with this is that bowel movements come in all sorts of sizes and colors without being indicative of serious disease. The one major exception to this is a concern about blood in the stool.
Anxiety can worsen IBS symptoms. You may be contributing to unnecessary anxiety by compulsively checking and worrying about stool changes. Do yourself a favor and reassure yourself that stool variability is quite normal and not something to be concerned about.

The disorder is as mysterious as it is smelly.
I wake up one morning certain that Ive become three months pregnant overnight. The farting starts immediately. I skip breakfast, spend a half hour searching for pants I can zip over my bloated stomach, and then hurry to work and sit at my desk by the door of a tiny office crammed with four editors. My belly doesnt rumble, but buzzes and shrieks. I shift in my chair to hide the cacophony.
Four hours pass. I take trips to the bathroom to stand in the stall and let it all out. My boss calls me into her office and I rise, suck it in, and waddle to her. Yes, of course Ill look at the brochure. Lunch time arrives. I cautiously eat some bread and peanut butter, then smell something rankish and panic. Did I just leak gas without knowing? No, someone is heating a cheesy burrito in the microwave.
Exhausted at the end of the day, I flatulate my way back home. I eat my first real meal of the day and continue to pass wind every 10 minutes, like clockwork, until bedtime. The funk makes it hard to sleep. The next morning, I rush to the bathroom, decide to risk breakfast, then stop at the door on my way out to run back for round two. I arrive 10 minutes late to work, tired already, and endure the same routine for two weeks before my bowels settle down and declare defeat.
What if I was bloated in the morning? What if I farted in the office? Would I get fired? Who would care?
What Are The Signs & Symptoms Of Irritable Bowel Syndrome
The main sign of IBS is belly pain or discomfort. Other signs include:
- a change in bowel habits
- feeling full quickly when eating
But having gas or a stomachache once in a while doesn’t mean someone has IBS. Doctors consider it IBS when symptoms last for at least 3 months and include at least two of these signs:
- pain or discomfort that feels better after a bowel movement
- pain or discomfort together with changes in how often a person has to go to the bathroom
- pain or discomfort along with changes in their stool . Some people get constipated, and their poop is hard and difficult to pass. Others have diarrhea.

Goes without saying, but everybody is unique and this is a general overview. Exactly what goes on in your gut is snowflake-style special. Let’s start at the beginning. There are two main triggers for IBS: certain foods, or stress. So now, one of two things might be happening.

The upshot? All of this liquid can overwhelm your body’s ability to absorb even more, meaning you need to vacate your bowels, urgently.

When To See Your Healthcare Provider
IBS follows an unpredictable course. There may be periods of relative calm, mixed back and forth with periods of pain or discomfort, and chaotic bowel habits that interfere with your life. However, if the basic pattern of your bowel symptoms changes or one of the situations described above occurs, a visit to your healthcare provider is in order.
Sometimes a drug you are taking for another purpose or something new in your diet may be responsible for the change, and your healthcare provider can help you determine that. A visit also provides your healthcare provider with the opportunity to review your diet, exercise habits, and drug regimen, and perhaps recommend changes.

Stress-related symptomslike abdominal pain and bloatingoccur more often and more intensely in people with IBS. Managing the stress in your life is important in avoiding flare-ups.
There are several effective methods for stress management that can improve IBS symptoms, including deep breathing and yoga. The secret is to breathe from your diaphragm, not your chest, to relax your abdominal muscles. Doing so can lead to more regular bowel activity.

You Eat A Lot Of Bread And Pasta
Some people automatically assume that gluten’s to blame for wheat belly, but it’s actually dietary fructans that more often cause issues in IBS sufferers, says Daniel Motola, M.D., gastroenterologist and clinical assistant professor of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center.
For example, in one Gastroenterology study of people who thought they were gluten-sensitive, fructans caused more digestive drama than gluten did. What gives? Well, the body isnt the greatest at breaking down fructans. Once they reach the large bowel, the bacteria in your gut gobbles them up and burps up gases, and in the process, may draw more water into the colon. Enter: bloating and diarrhea.
If you’ve got IBS, you may want to limit wheat products that contain fructans, such as bread and pasta, suggests Motola. Other eats that contain fructans include onions, garlic, cabbage, broccoli, pistachio, and asparagus.

Q. A few years ago I started having regular stomach upsets and going to the toilet five times a day.
I was diagnosed with IBS and given medication, but the pain is getting worse. My GP is refusing to arrange an MRI or CT scan. Could it be something more serious?
A. Irritable bowel syndrome, also called IBS, can only be diagnosed when other issues have been ruled out. Sadly, there is no specific test that proves someone has IBS, instead we rule out other conditions such as bowel disease and cancer.
The pain in IBS usually changes after going to the toilet, either improved or worsened. Many also have extreme bloating and frequent diarrhoea or constipation. Symptoms are often debilitating, causing huge disruption to sufferers lives.

An internal scan wouldnt be suitable or practical for these symptoms, but a series of blood tests would be useful.
This can rule out the autoimmune condition coeliac disease, highlight anaemia resulting from bowel cancer or show inflammation caused by bowel disease.
If IBS is the cause of symptoms, blood tests will be normal. For absolute clarity, a colonoscopy would be key.

Specific Treatments For Ibs Are Not Approved For Use
A small number of medications have been developed to treat IBS and have been shown to be effective in selected groups in clinical trials. These work on the interaction between serotonin and nerve cells of the colon. They include alosetron, cilansetron and tegaserod. Safety concerns with these three medications has led to their withdrawal from the market, or restricted use only, and none are presently licensed in Australia.
Changes In Your Typical Ibs Symptoms
If you suffer from IBS, you will know that symptoms can fluctuate over time. However, if you notice a change to your typical symptoms, a new or different kind of pain, or just something that doesn’t seem right to you, always get it checked out.
As previously touched on, certain factors can trigger a flare up of IBS, such as stress anxiety and low mood diet caffeine and alcohol intake and changes in your personal life. So, you may find your symptoms easing if you have been avoiding trigger foods. On the other hand, you may notice symptoms worsening when feeling stressed.
But if you don’t think anything has provoked your change in symptoms, get it checked by the doctor.

Ongoing Support from Health Coaches Improves Symptoms and Mental Health of Patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome Who Completed a Four-Week Program Focused on Dietary Changes and Meditation Practices
Irritable bowel syndrome affects approximately 10 to 20 percent of the population, with symptoms such as diarrhea, bloating, and cramping, often experienced after eating. People with IBS also suffer from depression at greater rates compared to the general population. Effective treatments for IBS often combine diet and lifestyle changes with mind-body therapies. A small trial published in 2018 indicates that when health coaches were integrated into a holistic treatment team, people with IBS saw improved symptoms and experienced a decreased likelihood of depression.
Although this study involved small groups, these findings indicate the need for collaborative healthcare beyond just the doctor-patient relationship. Understanding what changes should be made, such as following a low-FODMAP diet and practicing meditation, is not the same as actually following through and achieving these goals. Understanding how to prevent an IBS attack can help you cope with this condition. Here are a few tips to reduce the frequency of an attack:
- Increase physical activity to regulate intestinal contractions and ease constipation. Exercise for at least 30 minutes three days a week.
- Eat at the same time every day to help regulate bowel function.
- Keep a food journal to identify trigger foods.
- Slowly increase your fiber intake to ease constipation. Too much fiber can cause diarrhea.
- Try probiotics. Increasing the good bacteria in your digestive tract may relieve symptoms of IBS. Take probiotics as a supplement or eat yogurt containing probiotics.
- Drink peppermint tea or take peppermint supplements to ease intestinal spasms.
- Learn how to manage stress. Practice yoga, meditation, or mindfulness, or find enjoyable activities to minimize stress and anxiety.
- Experiment with acupuncture. This alternative therapy might relieve IBS symptoms.
- Consult a hypnotherapist and learn ways to relax your abdominal muscles. This may reduce symptoms of an IBS attack.
- Change your pattern of thinking with cognitive behavioral therapy. This technique teaches you how to replace negative thought patterns with positive ones.

You can develop IBS at any age, but you usually have your first symptoms when youre between 20 and 30. Cutting Out Potential Triggers Without An Experts Help
Figuring out your triggers will probably mean systematically cutting things out, especially foods, with the help of your doctor. As frustrating as this is, try to stick with it.
One thing I tell people is, dont expect overnight results, Poppers cautions. For example, if you stop eating, say, cruciferous vegetables, dont expect that this time tomorrow youre going to feel 100% better. If you do, thats fantastic. But it can take several days it could take longer. One reason for this is that you probably have multiple triggers. Even if youve found one, there could be other factors affecting your symptoms.
Its also important not to go overboard when youre cutting out potential triggers, particularly when that comes to food. As Buxbaum points out, if you try to eliminate every possible dietary trigger, Thats going to be hard to follow. If you do it all the same time, its a bit restrictive.
Both Buxbaum and Poppers instead recommend working with your doctor and an expert such as a registered dietitian to eliminate the different FODMAP elements one at a time. I dont like to overly restrict foods initially, because I want people to be able to enjoy what they enjoy, Poppers explains. The other reason I advise against restricting multiple things at once is that if someone is improving, its very difficult for me to determine what has actually made the difference if theyve changed too many things at once.
Acid Reflux Getting Worse
Last year I was diagnosed with disfunctional dyspepsia and the year before that I was told I had IBS although tablets I was given for the IBS didn’t really improve much so I stopped taking them. The problem is this, my acid reflux and gut problems are getting worse and are affecting my psychologically.
Originally for the acid I was prescribed 30mg of Lansoprozole once a day and although it did improve my symptoms I didn’t feel 100%. I had an endoscopy and the doctor said everything looked normal and so I remained on the Lansoprozole and after a few months they lowered my dosage to 15mg a day, to take another if I felt I needed to. So I try to keep to 15mg a day but this doesn’t really work.
Today I didn’t take one first thing like I usually do as I stayed away last night and this afternoon I’ve felt terrible. My insides from the stomach down just burn its like they’re on fire!
I’m stuck as to what to do now. I’m only 22 and feel like my life is just being ruined by this stupid ‘disease’. I can’t eat the foods I like, drinking alcohol is a no go and now even non-suspect foods set me off. I’m fed up of feeling ill constantly and now get in such a flap about it all. Sometimes I panic and my throat just seems to close up.
Is it worth going back to the doctor? I just get the impression they’d rather just throw some drugs in your face rather than get to the bottom of things. But feeling ill is getting me down and I’m turning into a hypochondriac!
