What Is Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Many people have digestive troubles once in a while. Irritable bowel syndrome is different, though. What sets it apart is belly pain and diarrhea or constipation that comes back again and again. But there are no signs of damage in the gastrointestinal system. And it doesn’t make you more likely to get colon cancer.
When Should I Worry About Upper Right Abdominal Pain
In most circumstances, it is safe to wait and see whether the upper stomach discomfort subsides on its own without seeking medical attention. If the discomfort persists or worsens, it is important to consult with a medical professional. If you have vomiting that lasts more than 12 hours, you should see a doctor within 24 hours.

Prevention Of Abdominal Pain
In many cases, abdominal pain can be prevented by adopting lifestyle and dietary choices that address the cause of your pain. Constipation, digestive upset, and even abdominal injury can often be prevented.
The following steps may help you prevent abdominal pain:
Drink plenty of water.
Develop regular bowel habits. Many people can train themselves to have regular bowel movements to help avoid constipation.
Follow a balanced, fiber-filled diet. Eating a variety of fruits, vegetables, and fiber-rich foods, like whole grains, can help support healthy digestion and reduce constipation.
Eat regularly and slowly. Eating moderately-sized meals, instead of waiting until youre very hungry and stuffing yourself, can help avoid pain from overeating or eating on an empty stomach.
Exercise regularly. Getting enough physical activity can help prevent constipation and strengthen your abdominal muscles, which may help prevent straining.
Wear a seatbelt properly.

In 1921, Alexander Tietze first described a syndrome characterized by a painful affliction of the costochondral cartilages .¹ He described a benign, painful, nonsuppurative swelling involving one or more of the costochondral or sternoclavicular junctions. The following year, Davies-Colley described two women in whom severe abdominal pain was caused by atraumatic, spontaneous overriding of the ninth and tenth ribs.² This syndrome has been dubbed Tietze syndrome, costal margin syndrome, clicking rib, rib tip syndrome, and now commonly slipping rib syndrome.³ Even though this disorder was described more than 60 years ago, it is often overlooked in the differential diagnosis of abdominal or chest pain. This article will review the diagnosis and treatment of the syndrome and present case examples.

An injury to one of more of your right ribs, such as popped rib out of place, or to the muscles connecting your right ribs will cause chest pain. Depending on the severity of the trauma to your rib cage, the pain may be mild to severe and can wrap around the ribs. In some cases the pain could radiate to your back causing rib pain in the back and in the right side.
An injury to your rib cage can also cause other serious complications like a collapsed lung or pleurisy. Or it could damage your spleen which is in the upper left of your rib cage.16

What Does Pain Under Right Rib Cage Mean
Gallbladder issues are common. Gallstones can cause intense discomfort under the right rib cage, which might be a sign of their presence. This is a term used to describe small balls of cholesterol or bile that form in the gallbladder. Gallstones are prevalent in adults, and in most cases, there are no symptoms associated with them.
Ruptured Spleen And Splenic Infarct
Your spleen also sits in the upper portion of the left side of your body, near your rib cage. It helps to remove old or damaged blood cells and produce white ones that fight infection.
An enlarged spleen, also called splenomegaly, usually doesnt cause any symptoms other than fullness after eating only a small amount of food. However, if your spleen ruptures, youll likely experience pain near your left rib cage. An enlarged spleen is more likely to rupture than a normal-sized spleen.
Several things can cause an enlarged spleen, including:
- viral infections, such as mononucleosis
- bacterial infections, such as syphilis
- parasitic infections, such as malaria
- blood diseases
- liver diseases
If your spleen ruptures, the area might also feel tender when you touch it. Youll also likely experience:
- low blood pressure
- blurry vision
A spleen rupture most commonly occurs as a result of trauma. Its a medical emergency and you should seek medical attention immediately.
You can also experience pain under the left side of your rib cage with a splenic infarction. Splenic infarcts are rare conditions where a portion of the spleen necrotizes or dies. This happens when the blood supply is compromised, usually as a result of trauma or arterial blockages.

Urinary tract problems can occur with IBS.The proximity of all these organs can cause this. If your doctor has reassured you, I would trust your doctor and do not worry. Worry will make your symptoms considerably worse. Try distraction techniques to keep your mind off your symptoms.

What Causes Ibs Pain
You can think about IBS pain in two ways. First, pain may be caused or worsened by the physical and social factors associated with IBS . Second, pain may be caused by how IBS affects the pain signaling function of the nervous system between the brain and the gut.âAbdominal IBS pain is typically referred to as a type of visceral pain. Unlike somatic pain, which is felt by the skin, muscles, bone, and soft tissues, visceral pain is felt around the internal organs, including the stomach and intestines.
It is important for people with IBS to understand that while pain is felt in different areas of the body, it is actually processed in the brain.ââ
Research into IBS shows that pain may be caused by oversensitive nerves in the gut. These nerves send signals to the brain, telling it to overreact to physical stimuli or tell the brain that normal digestion sensations are ‘painful.’
Millions of nerves and neurons run between the gut and the brain, along a neural highway called the gut-brain axis. This means that the brain can feel what’s happening in the gut and that the gut can feel what’s happening in the brain .

- Dear maria39241,
I used to get this pain and sometimes it was very bad.
It turned out that I had a peptic stomach ulcer which was diagnosed with a barium meal test.
The GP soon sorted it out with some prescribed medicine.
It might be worth asking if you might have a stomach ulcer. My ulcer was caused by bad eating habits and worry!
I hope you feel better soon and that they solve your problem.

Dear Bob and everyone that answered. Helps to know you are not alone. Bob I had an upper endoscopy 2 years ago and found only a hiatal hernia I really suspected an ulcer. Latest ct found nothing so flexture syndrome could be it. I ate a lot of chocolates the night before but I was getting twinges before. Today it is pretty sore to bend and food does aggrevate it quite a bit of pain in back. I am not constipated so wondered if that rules out the colon swelling under ribs. Any advice appreciated
Pain Specifically Under Left Or Right Rib Cage
Pain under the left rib cage may seem to be a more prevalent symptom. However, it is important to realize that the different types of rib pain will depend on the cause of the pain.
First of all, it is important to identify the exact location of your rib pain, since sometimes all it takes is millimeters to determine the cause. For instance, if you experience left rib cage pain, any of the organs on your left side could actually be responsible for your pain.
Rib cage pain can also be felt in your chest, abdominal area, or between the ribs. The pain may be occasional, or sudden, severe, and sharp in nature.
Burning pain can also cause rib cage discomfort. If the pain lasts many days, it may be a moderate dull ache. Some people will feel pain under the left rib cage only, or the pain may spread to your neck, shoulder, or jaw.
Some people believe that pain under the left rib cage is considered more serious than right-sided rib pain. This is because left-sided rib pain is associated with heart problems like heart attacks and angina.Although left-sided pain can indicate a serious problem, it is still important not to dismiss right-sided rib cage pain. In some instances, rib pain on the right side of the body can indicate serious issues like appendicitis, fecal impaction, gallstones, pancreatitis, a tumor, and inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohns disease or ulcerative colitis.
