More than simply being scientifically inaccurate, many old wives tales are firmly grounded in prejudice. Its not just that theyre wrong, but theyre wrong for the worst reasons. So while it might be fun to consider the following pregnancy old wives tales, its probably best to leave the superstition in the past and love your baby for whoever they turn out to be.

Answer: Old Wives Tale

Even if you’ve had two previous C-sections, you can go ahead and try to deliver the old-fashioned way. in 2010, the american College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists revised its guidelines on vaginal birth after Cesarean , determining that VBACs are a safe and appropriate option for most women. in the last few decades, doctors worried that because of their incision scar, women with previous C-sections were at a higher risk for uterine rupture, which is dangerous for both mother and baby.

Consequently, some hospitals and insurers restricted VBACs, and in 2006 to 2007 the VBAC rate fell to 8.5 percent while the C-section rate rose to 31 percent. Then in 2010, the National institutes of Health compiled a state-of-the-science report based on major VBAC studies of more than 20,000 women. The consensus: The risk of uterine rupture during a “trial of labor after Cesarean” is very lowbetween 0.5 percent and 0.9 percent.

When Im Pregnant And Have Heartburn Will My Baby Have A Full Head Of Hair

Heartburn has nothing to do with your heart, but it is a burning sensation that occurs internally towards the center of your chest. It is common for an expecting mother to feel the pangs of heartburn when pregnant–usually within the third trimester. Even those who are not pregnant can experience heartburn when the valve between the stomach and the esophagus are unable to prevent stomach acid from passing back into the esophagus. During pregnancy, the hormone progesterone causes the valve to relax, which can in turn increase the frequency of heartburn. Heartburn or indigestion can also be caused by the growing uterus crowding the stomach and pushing around the internal organs of your body. Ouch!

So, what does that have to do with my babys head of hair, you ask?

Salty Cravings Mean A Boy Is On The Way

Food cravings of all types are natural during pregnancy. Some women even crave the inedible, particularly potting soil a condition known as geophagia. These cravings are possibly linked to anemia, but theres no solid scientific explanation for this weird craving.

One thing that is clear is that specific food cravings have nothing to do with the sex of a fetus. More likely, this folk wisdom is based on gender bias. Because boys are more salt of the earth and fiery, gestating a boy would supposedly result in salty and spicy cravings. On the other hand, candy cravings would be due to growing a metaphorically sweet girl.

Pregnancy Old Wives Tale #: Heartburn And Hair Growth

Everyone has heard it if you have heartburn during your pregnancy, your baby will come out with a full head of hair. Well, heartburn is EXTREMELY common during pregnancy. The hormones that increase during all pregnancies cause relaxation of the sphincter muscle of the esophagus. Thus, most women have heartburn. It just so happens that MOST babies have hair on their head. So is this fact or fiction?

The verdict is still out. I usually try to give a solid answer based on substantial medical evidence. There is only one study examining the issue. Unfortunately, it is a very small study, looking at only 64 pregnancies. This study, out of Johns Hopkins, showed that women with more severe heartburn had babies with average to above average hair. And, conversely, it showed that women with little heartburn had babies with lower than average hair. The author hypothesizes that the hormones that lead to relaxation of the esophageal muscles are the also responsible for a babys hair growth and thus, the relationship is possible.

Based on that small study, Im not 100% sold but at least this myth is more plausible that many other old wives tales!

Ginger And Acupressure Relieve Morning Sickness

Pregnancy Heartburn: Causes, Symptoms, and Foods that Help

Answer: Old Wives Tale

Bad news for the 70 percent of pregnant women who experience nausea and vomiting in early pregnancy: There is no truly reliable treatment for morning sickness. Authors of a Cochrane systematic review analyzed 27 studies involving more than 4,000 pregnant women and found that not a single commonly used remedy, including ginger, acupuncture, acupressure, vitamin B6 and anti-nausea drugs, could be deemed effective.

” we found little evidence to support these popular therapies,” says study co-author Dónal O’Mathúna, Ph.d., a senior lecturer at Dublin City University school of Nursing in ireland. But this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try them . “Some of these therapies might work for some women,” O’Mathúna says. Plus, the placebo effect can be very powerful.

Research Study Into This Old Wives’ Tale

In 2006, US researchers looked into this old wives’ tale. Their study at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore involved 64 pregnant women.

They asked each of the women to rank how bad their heartburn was during the pregnancy.

Another group of researchers looked at the amount of hair on the heads of their newborn babies. They also ranked them using photographs.

The researchers found that of the 28 women who had heartburn, 23 had babies with plentiful hair.

The researchers think they know why this happened.

Hormones are released during pregnancy to relax a muscle in the stomach. Researchers think that this hormone may also control a baby’s hair growth.

But that’s just one study. Whether others will report similar findings remains to be seen.

But one thing is for sure, for most women their heartburn is hair today, gone tomorrow’ after the birth.

Feeling The Burn Tips To Manage Heartburn Gerd In Pregnancy

Heartburn is common in adults especiallyduring pregnancy. While some research suggests women who have moderateheartburn during pregnancy give birth to babies with fullerheads of hair, having symptoms more than twice a week might be asign of gastroesophageal reflux disease , or recurrent heartburn.

According to a study of 510 pregnant women, approximately 26% have GERD symptomsduring the first trimester. The rate jumps to 36% in the second trimester and51% during the third trimester. Thats substantial compared with the 20% of adults in the U.S. who experienceheartburn.

Why the increase in symptoms during pregnancy? Progesterone, a hormone that increases early in pregnancy, relaxessmooth muscle in the body. It helps your uterus stretch to accommodate thegrowing fetus, but also reduces the reliability of the esophageal sphincter aring-like structure that seals off stomach contents from the throat.

Increased pressure placed on the stomachexternally from the growing uterus, especially in the third trimester, can alsoworsen heartburn symptoms such as:

  • Burning pain in the center of thechest, especially after eating
  • Sour or bitter taste in the mouth
  • Sore throat or cough

Thankfully, thereare several pregnancy-safe ways to deal with acute heartburn and ongoing casesof GERD.

Is It True That A Lot Of Heartburn Means That The Baby Will Have A Lot Of Hair

One publication confirmed that this is maybe true. There is one publication confirming that women with heartburn are somewhat more likely to have a female fetus. In this 2006 publication, the authors say that “…Most women who reported moderate or severe heartburn gave birth to babies with average or above average amounts of hair, and conversely, most women reporting no heartburn had babies with less than average or no hair.”

Heartburn is common during pregnancy because, as the stomach is pushed higher by the growing baby and the expanding uterus, it becomes easier for acid to move backward from the stomach into the lower esophagus. Acid is irritating to the esophagus and causes the discomfort we know as heartburn. Remaining upright after eating, sleeping with the head of the bed at a slight elevation, and antacid medications can be helpful. Check with your obstetrician before taking any medications during pregnancy, including over-the-counter remedies.

Does Heartburn In Pregnancy Mean You’ll Have A Hairy Baby The ‘myth’ Is Actually Based In Truth

It’s one of those pieces of advice we dismiss as old wives’ tales, but there is a correlation

    • 17:40, 31 Jan 2018

There are many downsides to pregnancy, including bloating, weight gain and those inflated ankles.

But many women also experience excruciating heartburn, and it can even make sleeping difficult.

If you’ve ever suffered horrendous heartburn during pregnancy, you’ll probably have heard the following sentence – usually from older, wiser women.

“Your baby’s going to come out with a full head of hair.”

How does this even make sense? Surely the heartburn is down to baby squishing your organs and has nothing to do with how hirsute they are?

Well, there is actually a correlation between your level of heartburn and baby’s hairiness.

A study by John Hopkins University scientists in 2006 followed 64 pregnant women and monitored their symptoms.

Researchers admitted even they were surprised by the results.

They concluded: “Contrary to expectations, it appears that an association between heartburn severity during pregnancy and newborn hair does exist.

“We propose a shared biologic mechanism involving a dual role of pregnancy hormones in both the relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter and the modulation of fetal hair growth.”

So an excess of oestrogen is responsible for the relaxation of the muscle which closes off the bottom of your oesophagus – therefore causing acid to splash back up and cause heartburn – and an increase in baby hair.
