Why Is My Stomach Bloated

The most common cause of stomach pain and bloating is excess intestinal gas. If you get a bloated stomach after eating, it may be a digestive issue. It might be as simple as eating too much too fast, or you could have a food intolerance or other condition that causes gas and digestive contents to build up. Your menstrual cycle is another common cause of temporary bloating. Sometimes a bloated stomach can indicate a more serious medical condition.

Slow Down At Mealtime

Eating too fast is a common cause of abdominal bloating because it results in swallowed air. Once that air reaches the intestines, you may feel pain and be bloated. The stomach stretches as you eat and sends signals to the brain alerting you that you are full. However, it takes about 20 minutes for the stomach to alert the brain, so you could be overeating and swallowing lots of air before you feel uncomfortably full. Slow down, chew thoroughly, and enjoy your meals. Drink enough water and stay hydrated to help ensure healthy digestion.

How Can You Relieve Bloating Fast

Koch points out it is best to identify and address the cause of bloating. For excess gas accumulation, you may find reducing your consumption of the types of foods that contribute to bloating may help, she says. This includes fibrous foods like beans, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, oats, as well as carbonated drinks, and gum.

Incorporating more gut-healthy foods into your diet can help strengthen your gut bacteria, which aids in breaking down food and digestion. This includes fermented or probiotic-containing foods like kefir, kimchi, kombucha, tempeh, sauerkraut, and yogurt. I encourage my clients to eat at least one fermented food or probiotic per day, says Koch.

If you know you typically shovel food down your throat fast, slow down and take your time. Put your fork or spoon down between bites, stay mindful, try not to multi-task while eating, and consider smaller portions. This will help slow your eating, which can impact the amount of air you swallow, reducing stomach bloat, Koch says.

How Do I Live With Functional Dyspepsia

Functional disorders like FD are complex. They often involve the brain and nervous system, diet and lifestyle factors as well as organic causes in your digestive system. Thats what makes them so tricky for both patients and healthcare providers to manage. Medical testing can help rule things out, but often cant tell you exactly whats going on. In the end, you are the one in the best position to notice what makes your symptoms better or worse. As you try out different therapies and work to reduce your triggers, youll find your own way to live with functional dyspepsia.

Everyones Abs Look Different

Guess what? Some people just dont have the muscle structure for a 6-pack. For some people, only a few of the abdominal muscles will show definition. On the same note, we all store fat a little differently. If youre someone who holds onto fat in the abdominal area or you notice weight gain there first, it will probably be more difficult to see ab definition than it is for someone who stores more fat in their hips and thighs.

Normal Vs Abnormal Bloating

Like with other unrealistic beauty standards, people on social media have worked to dismantle the idea that bloating is inherently bad by sharing photos of their stomachs before and after they eat, or during their periods.

One content creator, @claraandherself on TikTok, has built a 1-million-strong follower base, thanks in large part to her viral “outfits before and after I eat” videos.

“If I’m totally honest with you, I only have abs in the morning,” an Instagram influencer, @healthychefsteph, wrote in a post in 2017. “It’s natural. Don’t punish yourself for it.”

One common refrain on social media is that the difference between normal and abnormal bloating is pain if it doesn’t hurt, it’s nothing to worry about. But the truth isn’t quite that simple, Vaca-Flores says, because pain is a subjective experience. “Some people might describe the abdominal pressure from normal bloating as painful whereas others might say it’s uncomfortable,” she says. “Similarly, people with underlying health conditions may experience bloating that is constant, but not painful.”

A better way to identify abnormal bloating is by looking for other accompanying symptoms. This type of bloating usually occurs alongside at least one other symptom, like nausea, diarrhea or constipation, Vaca-Flores explains. Also, keep track of when and how often you experience bloat. “People with digestion-related health conditions are likely to experience bloating at most meals,” she says.

Is Bloat In Dogs Curable

All cases of bloat require immediate medical attention to determine the severity. If bloat is treated immediately, it is often curable.

Simple bloat, where the dogs stomach has not twisted, can sometimes be managed without medication, but may require fluids or other treatments.

Other degrees of bloat, including GDV, can also be curable if diagnosed in the early stages. These conditions are usually treated with immediate surgery.

Eat At Regular Intervals

Many people experience bloating directly after a big meal. It is possible to avoid this by eating several smaller meals each day, which can help to keep the digestive system moving.

Swallowing food quickly can introduce air into the digestive tract. Drinking from a straw can also lead to people swallowing more air, which in turn leads to gas and bloating. People who have bloating should avoid using straws if possible and try eating slowly to avoid swallowing air during meals.

Rule Out Medical Conditions

In some cases, bloating may result from a medical condition. To get rid of this bloating, a person may need help from a doctor to diagnose and manage their condition.

Inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis, may cause people to experience bloating. Irritable bowel syndrome , can also cause this symptom.

Gynecological conditions, such as endometriosis and ovarian cysts, can also cause pain, swelling, and feelings of bloating in the abdominal area.

People with these symptoms should discuss them with a doctor, who will also want to know about any relevant family medical history and other medical conditions. The doctor may order diagnostic tests to look for any problems. These may include an X-ray, ultrasound, colonoscopy, or blood tests.

Bloating has a decidedly negative connotation in the wellness world. Used to describe that full balloon feeling in your stomach or abdomen, the word “bloating” often comes up in the context of how to reduce or stop it.

But some amount of bloating is, in fact, normal for many people. And if the main reason you’re worried about bloating is that you want to have a flatter stomach around the clock, you might be chasing an unrealistic goal. On the other hand, if your bloating is accompanied by other digestive symptoms, it might be a sign of an underlying issue.

No body is exactly the same as another. But for many of us, bloating throughout the day or month is a totally routine occurrence. I, for example, tend to get a visible food baby by the end of the day. For a long time, I felt ashamed of that post-meal bloat and found myself sucking in, hiding it or avoiding the mirror. But thanks to dietitians and wellness influencers who are working to normalize bloating, I’ve learned to shake off the shame, tune into my own body and learn what’s “normal” for me.

Natural And Other Remedies For Gas

Many advertisements tout medications or remedies that reduce gas and bloating. Some have been shown to be of value in clinical studies, others have not yet been proven scientifically but are anecdotally helpful. Before trying anything, you may want to consult with your physician.

Two products on the market can help with food-related gas and bloating. Both products are packaged forms of the enzymes needed to break down the problematic carbohydrates. Lactase, found in products such as Dairy Ease and Lactaid, can be taken with dairy foods to help break down lactose and lessen gas. Beano helps digest the indigestible carbohydrate in beans and other gas-producing vegetables.

My Stomach Makes Me Look Pregnant

I have been having problems with my stomach for quite a while now.My stomach is always round and bloated ,as if i am pregnant.I have pain most days and have severe cramps and vaginal muscle cramps/contractions during my period. I also bleed a lot.I eat healthy, take multivitamins and drink water and no sodas or fruit drinks just fruits and veggies. I know most people have flatter stomachs even those who dont eat as well as me.I have done research and have come to some conclusions that could fit. I think i might have a uterine fibroid or cyst, something that is making my stomach big.I also have ugly stretchmarks even though i have never been pregnant and am not pregnant, but at times it looks like it.If anyone has anything similar or knows anything,i would really appreciate the feedback.

Being constantly bloated can also be a sign of ovarian cancer. Since being bloated is so common in women, its hard to diagnose it.

have them do a blood test also, i suffered 23 years with that, to find my level were high and i have zollinger-ellison sydrome,,after sug i lost my big round belly and lost excessive wt cause my tumas

I have had big stomach etc. Same as you. I did have fibroids and ovarian cysts. They say that poly cystic ovarian syndrome causes such or anything to do with metabolic syndrome .

I have the same issues. Identical and would really like an answer to this.

Bloating will come and go throughout the days, particularly if you have digestive issues like irritable bowel syndrome. Belly fat accumulation happens over a period of time and is more consistent.

If youre noticing that your stomach expands and then flattens over the course of the day or week, then it is likely stomach bloat. If your stomach is constantly larger than before, it is more likely weight gain.

Will I Need Surgery For Ascites

Sometimes, diuretics and a low-sodium diet arent enough to improve the ascites. You may need other treatments, including:

  • Paracentesis: Your provider inserts a needle into your abdomen to remove the fluid. This procedure can remove a large amount of excess fluid.
  • Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt : This procedure is performed to treat fluid build-up in the abdomen. A wire mesh is inserted into a vein in your liver. When inflated, the stent forms a channel to bypass the liver. TIPS may be appropriate if your ascites arent responding to other therapies, if you need several paracenteses per month and youre not a candidate for a liver transplant.
  • Liver transplant: In cases of severe cirrhosis, when the liver is failing, a liver transplant may be necessary.

I had a bowel resection due to crohns disease over 2 and a half years ago, i found i was able to do situps roughly 8-10 weeks after surgery, but only taking it slow, like starting with 10 a day, and slowly built up, however i still have a lot of distention since the surgery.

Iâm only 18 now and having been younger when i had surgery i would have thought my age would have assisted the recovery but i seem to have the same results as everybody else who has had this surgery.

Is there any specific exercises i can do to help minimize this distention?

I had an emergency bowel resection due to endometriosis that I didnt know I had. It had formed around my small intestine 4 years ago and I had 6 inches removed. The left side of my belly sticks out quite a bit I look nine months pregnant. When I stand up it is very hard and heavy. I really dont know what to do about it. I also have bouts of diareah and constipation. im not sure if that is normal after that type of surgery. I went back to the surgeon who did my surgery and he really seem like there was anything I could do. I cant live like this its very uncomfortable and it looks terrible. I was wondering if anyone else had this happen to them?

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth

This blogger got so real about what PMS bloating looks like ...

The stomach and intestines are home to various bacteria, which help the body digest food. Disturbing the balance of bacteria can lead to an increase in harmful bacteria in the small intestine. This is known as small intestinal bacterial overgrowth or SIBO.

SIBO can cause bloating, frequent diarrhea, and difficulties digesting food and absorbing nutrients. These chronic symptoms may lead to osteoporosis or weight loss in some people.
