You know that upping your fiber intake can aid your rapid weight loss efforts, but if you aren’t used to eating the uber-filling nutrient a large dose of the stuff can be hard for your body to digest, explains Rumsey. The result? A midsection that’s suddenly as round as a basketball. “Wean yourself onto high-fiber foods like bran cereals, beans, and lentils, starting with small portions,” suggests Rumsey. Another trick: Down a large glass of water with every high-fiber meal. Fluids help to move fiber through the digestive tract, preventing bloat.

Food Intolerance And Bloating

Food intolerance can lead to bloating when:

  • your bowel does not empty properly
  • the food causes gas to be trapped
  • too much gas is produced as a reaction to the food

The most common foods to cause problems are wheat or gluten and dairy products.

The best approach if you have a food intolerance is to eat less of the problem food or cut it out completely.

Keep a food diary for a couple of weeks, noting everything that you eat and drink and when bloating troubles you most. But do not get rid of food groups long-term without advice from your GP.

    Lactose intolerance ends up being more common in adulthood, according to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse, and is especially common in non-Caucasian individuals. If youre intolerant to lactose, the naturally occurring sugar in cows milk dairy products can cause or aggravate gassiness. Nondairy milks, such as almond, soy and rice milks, offer useful options. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends that people with irritable bowel syndrome, a condition that typically causes gassiness, bloating and other symptoms in 10 to 20 percent of the population, limit these fruits and vegetables and emphasize less gaseous whole foods in their diet. Non-gassy vegetables and fruits, or at least those less likely to make you uncomfortable, include berries, cantaloupe, bell peppers, asparagus and avocado.

    What Types Of Food Cause Stomach Bloating

    If you’re experiencing regular bloating, you should see a doctor and discuss your symptoms with them. Together, you can come up with a treatment plan. As previously discussed, because there are many causes for abdominal bloating, it can be challenging to determine what causes an individuals stomach to bloat.

    The first line of treatment for bloating that a doctor may prescribe is the low FODMAP diet. FODMAP stands for:

    • Fermentable Oligosaccharides. These are found in wheat, onions, garlic, legumes, and beans.
    • Disaccharides. A class of sugars that are found in lactose products like milk, yogurt, and ice cream.
    • Monosaccharides. This is a type of sugar that includes fructose. It’s often found in fruits like apples and pears.
    • Polyols. Also called sugar alcohols, they’re found in apricots, nectarines, plums, and cauliflower. They can also be added to chewing gums and candy.

    A low FODMAP diet cuts down the number of carbohydrates listed above that you consume. It has been found the small intestine can have a difficult time absorbing them, so it then passes the unabsorbed carbohydrates to the colon. In the colon, they become fermented and then make gas and cause bloating.

    Some people may not have a sensitivity to FODMAP foods. The best way to find out if this diet will work for you is to start cutting FODMAP foods out of your diet slowly and then slowly start bringing them back.

    How To Prevent Bloating

    There can be many ways to prevent and avoid bloating. I have to suggest some of them, such as

    • Avoid the mentioned foods that are known to cause gases and start including ginger, asparagus, papaya, and pineapple in your diet.
    • Eat slowly. Slow down when eating doesnt give your body a chance to feel full, making it easier to overeat.
    • You should not use straws while drinking the juice, fizzy drinks, or other carbonated drinks as it may end up consuming more air inside the body.
    • Eat more foods high in fiber to prevent constipation. If foods alone dont help, consider taking a fiber supplement.
    • Avoid chewing gum.
    • Quit smoking.
    • Avoid tight pants or skirts. This wont prevent bloat per se, but it certainly helps when youre feeling bloated.

    You could also add in some carminatives to your meal to aid digestion when consuming these foods. Try not to restrict your diet by completely removing such foods from your diet, as they provide many essential nutrients and are important for overall gut health.     So, what is bloat, exactly?

    The greasy or fried foods can wreak havoc on your GI tract. Such foods are high in fat which takes it longer to digest, which means food stays in your GI tract longer.

    The meat, pizza, or other foods are to be limited if you feel the bloating symptoms after consuming them.

    They can really slow down the digestive process in our guts. Subsequently, the build-up of gas takes longer to pass through and leave you feeling bloated and uncomfortable

    Why Do I Feel Bloated After Eating Bread

    There are lots of reasons for bloating, but some people find that they feel more bloated after eating bread, says Sarah. Theres a common misconception this is because of gluten . However, its only certain people such as those with coeliac disease who need to avoid it, she says.

    For the average healthy person, theres very little proof bread causes bloating, says Helen. A 2014 review by Dr Elisabeth Weichselbaum for the British Nutrition Foundation found no correlation between bread consumption and symptoms. It may be that people who feel bloated have a gut thats more sensitive to distension. Or they feel bloated because of constipation, she explains.

    If you do feel bloated after eating bread, here are some possible reasons why, says Sarah:

    • Portion size Eating too much of anything can make us feel bloated.
    • Fructans or other FODMAPs in bread. FODMAPs are prebiotics found in certain foods. Theyre great because they feed gut bacteria, but this can create gas and make us feel bloated.

    Fibre may be another reason why some people experience bloating, says Helen. Dietary surveys reveal that in the UK, on average, bread provides a fifth of our total fibre intake. A slice of wholemeal bread provides 2.7g fibre thats about 9% of our daily fibre needs. so its not exactly a surprise that most people may be eating a low fibre diet without even realising it.

It can happen for several reasons: food allergies and intolerances, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation and pre-menstrual syndromebut more often than not, eating certain foods that either produce gas or cause your body to retain water is the culprit. The way that you eat a food can also make you bloat, toolike eating too quickly or drinking from a straw. Air can get into your digestive system by being swallowed. To minimize the amount of air you swallow, eat slowly and chew your food thoroughly, Blahut says.

    Bloating is rarely serious, but as it is sometimes associated with certain digestive disorders and allergies, Blahut recommends seeing a doctor if you have frequent, uncomfortable bloating. If you suspect lactose intolerance, gluten intolerance or celiac disease, or if you have other symptoms such as diarrhea or abdominal pain with eating, see your doctor, she says.
