Or Lactose Intolerance Could Be The Issue

Why Does Diarrhea Smell So Bad? | Doctor Sameer Islam

Lactose, a natural sugar found in dairy products, is famously difficult for many adults to digest. One of the most common reasons people may suffer from excessive gas is lactose intolerance, says Ferraz Valles.

This can cause excessive gas and other gastrointestinal distress. According to the National Institutes of Health , approximately 65% of people have difficulty digesting lactose.

Since different dairy products contain different amounts of lactose , people may notice worse symptoms after eating different types of dairy, says the NIH. However, abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, and lots of smelly farts 30 minutes to 2 hours after eating dairy indicate lactose intolerance.

What Are The Symptoms Of Ibs

The symptoms of IBS may vary from person to person. Symptoms tend to come and go over time, and often last for several days or weeks. There may be times when symptoms are worse than others.

Common symptoms of IBS include:

  • Abdominal pain and cramps.
  • Urgent need to go to the toilet.
  • Feeling of not having completely emptied the bowels after going to the toilet.

The symptoms of IBS are often relieved by a bowel movement .

Have You Had Stomach Surgery

If you have had bariatric surgery, it could be that your gas is a symptom of a malfunction in the way your stomach is emptying waste into the small intestine. This condition is called dumping syndrome. It occurs when waste is rapidly flushed from the stomach into the duodenum either too early or too late after eating. Nausea, excessive gas, severe cramping, sweating, dizziness, diarrhea, bloating and an irregular heartbeat are some of the symptoms of dumping syndrome.

For any of these concerns, its important that you visit your doctor to discuss your symptoms and possible treatments. Waiting might only make your condition worse.

You Ate A Bunch Of Sulfur

According to Dr. Ravella, super-smelly gas is often the result of eating foods rich in sulfur, which the digestive system breaks down into stinky compounds called sulfides. Two high-sulfur foods Americans eat a lot of: meat and eggs. Ever had gas that smells like rotten eggs? Yeah, thats from a nasty by-product called hydrogen sulfide.

Other foods that can lead to sulfide-related smelly farts include garlic, sulfite-containing wines, and dried fruits preserved with sulfur dioxide, says Ferraz Valles.

Medicines For Pain And Bloating

Why does he smell so bad

Medicines that relieve abdominal cramping should be used as-needed, rather than on a regular basis. These medicines may also be used preventively when pain is predicted, such as after large meals.

Prescription and over-the-counter products that help alleviate the pain associated with IBS include:

  • peppermint oil
  • hyoscine butylbromide
  • hyoscyamine plus hyoscine hydrobromide plus atropine and
  • mebeverine .

Some antidepressant medicines including tricyclic antidepressants and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors , when taken in low doses, may be beneficial in reducing pain in people with IBS. In these situations the antidepressant medicines are being used for their pain-relieving properties rather than for their effect on mood.

Side effects will depend on the type of medicine you take.

Things To Stop Doing When You Have Ibs

Irritable bowel syndrome does not come with a handbook. When you are diagnosed with IBS you are likely not to know all of the ways to cope with the condition. It’s invisible, chronic, and it involves embarrassing physical symptoms you want to reduce.

In addition to trying out various treatment options, it is also important to understand the common pitfalls and learn how to avoid them.

How Many Minutes Should You Walk A Day To Lose Weight

Why Does My Bowel Movement Smell Like Death

Most of the time, smelly poop is caused by your diet. It could be caused by eating certain foods or from lactose intolerance. But if it routinely smells bad, you may have an imbalance in your microbiome or a disease like inflammatory bowel disease. Occasional foul-smelling stool may not require any treatment.

What Will The Doctor Do

Most kids get a stomachache, constipation, or diarrhea now and then. This doesn’t mean a kid has IBS.

But when a kid has these problems regularly, a doctor may think it could be IBS. Here are some questions the doctor might ask:

  • How often does the kid’s stomach hurt? Every week? Every 2 weeks? Every day? A kid with IBS will have a stomachache at least 12 weeks out of a year. That’s a lot!
  • What makes that pain go away? If the pain stops after the kid poops, there’s a good chance it’s IBS.
  • How often does the kid have to poop? With IBS, it could be more often or less often than usual.
  • Now the gross one: What does the poop look like? Sometimes kids notice that their poop looks different than usual. It may be a different color, slimier, or contain something that looks like mucus . That’s a real signal to the doctor that a kid might have IBS.
  • There is no test to diagnose IBS. Doctors often diagnose the problem just by listening to a person describe the symptoms. That’s why it’s really important for kids to talk with their parents and their doctor about their symptoms, even if it seems embarrassing.

Family Doctor Dawn Harper On The Questions To Ask

Irritable bowel syndrome is a common gut disorder that will affect up to one in five people in the UK at some stage in their life. Symptoms can vary, from abdominal pain and bloating to bouts of diarrhoea and/or constipation. There is no cure for IBS, but symptoms can often be eased with treatment.

We asked GP Dr Dawn Harper what she would want to know if she was diagnosed with IBS.

Is my diet causing my IBS?Keep a food diary. Writing down everything you eat and when symptoms flare up can be enlightening. Dairy products and wheat are common triggers of IBS, but beware of excluding these foods permanently. Cut them out in the short term and continue your symptom diary. If your symptoms disappear, these foods may have been responsible.

Remember, stress and routine can play a significant role in IBS, so re-challenge your system a few weeks later to see if the symptoms recur. If youre considering eliminating a food group from your diet long term, speak to a dietitian about how to replace the lost nutrients.

What other factors can affect my condition?Eat regularly. Missing meals then binging will make your symptoms worse. Try to sit down to eat. Eating on the move isnt good for your digestive system.

How can I manage my stress levels? This may be easier said than done, but try making a note of stressful situations that trigger your IBS. You wont be able to avoid some stresses, but putting them down on paper may help you to identify the ones you can do something about.

Do Pit Bulls Have A Strong Odor Or Smell

As a whole Pit Bulls do not have a particularly strong odor or smell. No more than most breeds of dog. A healthy, well exercised Pit Bull with a regular bathing and grooming schedule will not give off a strong odor or smell. If they do this is a sign of a potential health or hygiene problem.

All dogs are different and will have a dog smell about them that varies. Pit Bulls as a breed however are not known to have a particular smell or a strong odor. In the next section I will help you identify potential causes of strong odors and smells coming from your Pit Bull.

    Common Complaints With Flatulence

Why Does My Dog Smell So Bad?
    • Loud flatus this is caused by the muscles of the bowel forcing air through the tight ring of muscle at the anus. Suggestions include passing the air with less power, and reducing the amount of intestinal gas by making dietary adjustments.
    • Smelly flatus the gas produced by bacterial fermentation can smell, depending on the food eaten. Suggestions include limiting common culprits such as garlic, onions, spicy foods and beer.
    • Excessive flatus this is caused by swallowing air, eating high-fibre foods, lactose intolerance or some digestive disorders. Suggestions include reducing the amount of intestinal gas by making dietary adjustments and seeking medical advice.

    Stop Eating Junk Food

Although the relationship between IBS and food is far from clear-cut, most of the people who have found significant relief from their IBS will tell you that they have cut out all junk food from their diet.

Perhaps your friends who have “stomachs of steel” can eat fast food or processed food, but you may no longer have that luxury. In the short-term, this can be challenging, as junk food is often readily available and can be quite appealing.

In the long-term, the avoidance of this type of nutritionally-deficient food may be the silver lining of the IBS cloud, as you will be fueling your body with more wholesome options.

Why is junk food so bad for IBS? Here are some of the reasons:

Why Does My Fart Feel Sharp

Gas occurs when normal bacteria break down food in the gastrointestinal tract. Intestinal gas also consists of carbon dioxide and hydrogen. As gas moves through the digestive tract, it can stretch the stomach and intestines. This can result in sharp, jabbing pain and bloating or cramping that is highly uncomfortable.

    Putting It All Together

Why does Insulin Smell So Bad?

IBS is long-term and tends to repeatedly come and go over time. It does not predispose you to other GI diseases. However, IBS does not protect you from other digestive conditions, and overlap is possible. New and different symptoms may make you suspicious that something new is happening.

You should visit your healthcare provider if you become aware of alarm symptoms or of a factor that might put you more than normally at risk of another disease. Your healthcare provider may review your symptoms and determine if further testing or treatment is necessary.

Usually, if the original diagnosis was sound, recurrent, but similar symptoms do not signify a new disease.

    Constipation Symptoms And Signs

You are likely be constipated if you are experiencing any of the following:

    • Fewer bowel movements than normal
    • Pain and straining when passing stools
    • Stomach pain
    • Lack of exercise
    • Some medicines, especially pain killers
    • Some people with neurological problems such as Parkinsons disease or Multiple Sclerosis are prone to constipation
    • Surgery around the anus can sometimes be a cause of constipation mainly due to pain when emptying the bowel afterwards
    • Conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome , Colitis and Crohns Disease
    • Ignoring the urge to open the bowels
    • There is a strong connection between emotional feelings and how the gut works. Feeling upset can make your bowel slow down or speed up.

What Affects The Smell Of My Farts

A number of factors influence the odour of your gas, and how much of it you emit. Eating foods with a high sulphur content is the major driver of smelly farts. Foods from the cruciferous family broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussel sprouts have high sulphur levels, which is why they often result in farts with that rotten-egg smell. Eggs are also predictable spawners of smelly farts, as are meat and dairy. More surprisingly, onions, spicy food, and dried fruit are all potential culprits when it comes to upping the stinkiness factor.

Getting To The Guts Of The Problem

Jennyjames posted a forum message to say that for the last two months she had been getting really bloated and passing the most foul-smelling gas ever.

She ate healthily, exercised regularly and was not overweight. Doctors had tested a stool sample but found it clear. She was told she had IBS and was prescribed Colofac® tablets but these didn’t help.

She had to air her bungalow every evening. She could not have visitors, had given up her job and was getting seriously depressed.

Jennyjames is clearly not alone. Her posting attracted 247 replies.

21st century doctors are supposed to go on about changes in lifestyle as well as pushing pills and whilst this condition is no different, it’s always worth ruling out treatable underlying causes. Be87654 suggested getting tested for coeliac disease. Other causes can include diverticulitis and scleroderma, a condition which causes thickening of the skin and sometimes the internal organs.

Tracy62295 wanted to make the forum aware that ovarian cancer can lead to bowel symptoms and that bloating in women over 40 shouldn’t be ignored. Pookie64 noticed her smelly farts were caused by gabapentin, an anti-epileptic medicine. Other medicines that can do this are metformin, used for diabetes, and lactulose, a laxative.

It May Be A Sign Of Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Why Do I smell so good. Here is why

Irritable bowel syndrome, a condition in which dysfunction in the large intestine causes digestive issues like bloating and abdominal pain, and bouts of diarrhea and constipation, is yet another common culprit behind particularly smelly farts, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Though frequent gas alone is not enough to diagnose IBS, changes in gas odor and production are common factors, says Dr. Ravella. Often, managing IBS involves making healthy diet and lifestyle changesand addressing stress.

    Medicines And Supplements For Constipation

If constipation is severe, increased fibre may be ineffective and may worsen abdominal pain and bloating. In this case your doctor may recommend laxatives.

Stimulant laxatives such as senna should generally be avoided, as should prolonged use of any laxative.

Some of the over-the-counter products available to relieve constipation include:

    • psyllium
    • macrogol 3350
    • frangula plus sterculia
    • lactulose
    • sorbitol
    • paraffin liquid and
    • docusate .

    Side effects

Some laxatives are not suitable for certain people. People with irritable bowel syndrome tend to find the side effects of lactulose and sorbitol difficult to manage. Check with your doctor about the most appropriate type of laxative for you.

What It’s Like To Have Irritable Bowel Syndrome

The disorder is as mysterious as it is smelly.

I wake up one morning certain that Ive become three months pregnant overnight. The farting starts immediately. I skip breakfast, spend a half hour searching for pants I can zip over my bloated stomach, and then hurry to work and sit at my desk by the door of a tiny office crammed with four editors. My belly doesnt rumble, but buzzes and shrieks. I shift in my chair to hide the cacophony.

Four hours pass. I take trips to the bathroom to stand in the stall and let it all out. My boss calls me into her office and I rise, suck it in, and waddle to her. Yes, of course Ill look at the brochure. Lunch time arrives. I cautiously eat some bread and peanut butter, then smell something rankish and panic. Did I just leak gas without knowing? No, someone is heating a cheesy burrito in the microwave.

Exhausted at the end of the day, I flatulate my way back home. I eat my first real meal of the day and continue to pass wind every 10 minutes, like clockwork, until bedtime. The funk makes it hard to sleep. The next morning, I rush to the bathroom, decide to risk breakfast, then stop at the door on my way out to run back for round two. I arrive 10 minutes late to work, tired already, and endure the same routine for two weeks before my bowels settle down and declare defeat.

What if I was bloated in the morning? What if I farted in the office? Would I get fired? Who would care?
