Leaky Gut Symptoms| Watch Out! You May Have Leaky Gut Symptoms
  • I use 1 tablespoon of non-hydrogenated organic coconut oil in my daily shake/juice. Tastes insanely good and as weird as this sounds, gives a lovely mouth feel to the shake. Just make sure you get quality coconut oil that is not rancid and not filled with all kinds of crazy chemicals.
  • Now and then I will have half a can of coconut milk in my shake instead of the oil . Probably 2 times a week. This is the taste of island holidays in food form!
  • Since my gut is now in good health and able to handle oats these days, I will cook up some gluten-free oats with coconut milk on gym days. Of course, theres a lot of energy in this sort of concoction, so best to pair with commensurate training.
  • Coconut oil is my go to cooking oil for many dishes, eg a mild Thai-style chicken & broccoli stir fry.

Overcoming Leaky Gut And Candida

So how does one overcome Leaky Gut and Candida once it has become systemic?

I have gotten the best long term results with Candida infections using specific dietary modifications to help starve off the Candida. But thats not the end of the fight because you still have to heal your Leaky Gut, close up your intestinal barrier, and rebalance your gut flora. Otherwise the Candida will just overgrow and leak through the intestinal barrier again and continue to be a systemic issue. And youll be right back where you started.

I will note that there are some natural herbal supplements that can help but alone these are not the answer because supplements alone will not work long term without the necessary dietary modifications.

And oftentimes the supplements can be too harsh causing severe die off reactions which can really stress the liver and body and be counter-productive to healing.

Because Leaky Gut and Candida are so commonly found together and tend to feed off each other, I have included a separate guide specifically for Candida and other pathogenic organisms in my Leaky Cure Program.

How Bone Broth Helps Leaky Gut

Not only will the fast give your digestive system a much needed break, it will also ensure no more big food particles are making their way through your leaky gut and into your bloodstream.

That means inflammation can cool down and your immune system will also get a chance to regroup.

Meanwhile, the bone broth itself has a huge benefit for our gut, because the collagen in it delivers a huge serving of the types of amino acids our GI tract feeds on in order to repair itself eg glycine, proline and hydroxyproline4,5.

These amino acids work great together to mend the damaged cells lining the wall of our gut. Amazing!

Why Vegetable Oils Are Bad For Leaky Gut

These industrial vegetable oils are high in omega 6s, and known to be a vast contributor to the imbalance of omega 3s to 6s in the western diet87 (that now sees us typically consuming 20:1 omega 6s to 3s, when historically we consumed 1:1 or 2:1!

By contrast extra virgin olive oil88 and coconut oil which are non-industrial vegetable oils deliver much more balanced omega fatty acid profiles.

Most industrial vegetable oils are also susceptible to oxidation when cooked and typically GMO based.

The Most Effective Ways To Help A Client With Leaky Gut Syndrome

Everyone and their mother seem to be talking about “Leaky Gut Syndrome” lately. As a wellness professional, you may even have clients coming to you with symptoms asking, “Do you think it might be leaky gut!?”.

Leaky Gut Syndrome refers to an increase in intestinal permeability or intestinal hyperpermeability in extreme cases.

A healthy gut lining allows only specific components of food to pass through into the bloodstream. This is how nutrients enter the bloodstream and promote health.

However, poor diet, stress, and some medications can damage the gut lining over time. The result is a more permeable gut lining, which allows larger particles to enter the bloodstream while failing to properly absorb key nutrients.

Undigested food particles, gut bacteria, proteins, and toxic waste shouldnt be able to enter the bloodstream. But when the gut lining becomes compromised they do, causing negative consequences.

While Leaky Gut was once thought to affect only those with serious medical conditions such as Celiac Disease, we now know that even slight increases in intestinal permeability can cause chronic health issues.

Common signs and symptoms of Leaky Gut include autoimmune disease, food sensitivities, digestive issues, inflammatory skin conditions, compromised immunity, joint pain, brain fog and low energy.

Today I’ll be discussing the most effective ways to help a client with leaky gut syndrome including

Food Allergy Testing and Leaky Gut – Pros and Cons

The program eliminates added sugar, additives, grains, alcohol, dairy, and legumes for 30 days. After 30 days, you try foods one at a time to see if you feel good after eating them . The ultimate goal is to continue eating nutrient-rich, unprocessed foods and avoid problematic foods for you.

There are no specific research studies on this eating plan, but it is based on a familiar nutrition principle the elimination diet. Remove the most likely causes of symptoms to see if you feel better. Nourish your body, especially your gut, with whole foods free of additives and full of fiber, vitamins, and minerals for 30 days. Reintroduce the eliminated foods one at a time and see if you feel worse. Because this is so popular, there are many cookbooks, Whole30 approved brands, and blogs to support your journey if youre interested in trying it.

Even though there are no studies on this diet, it does eliminate processed foods, alcohol, sugar, which would presumably decrease inflammation.

Leaky Gut And Candida A Much Bigger Systemic Problem

Candida can cause some issues when it begins to take over and overgrow in the gut. But much bigger problems arises when you develop Leaky Gut and Candida is able to pass through the intestinal barrier into your blood stream and become systemic.

Once Candida becomes systemic, it becomes increasingly difficult to manage and control. It can literally affect any part of your body and is a common cause of

    • Chronic Jock Itch
    • Thrush or White Coated Tongue
    • Dandruff
    • and other fungal related issues

Why is this so important to understand?

Because if youre dealing with any of these issues above then youre likely not going to get any relief until you begin to fix the underlying cause of the problem instead of treating the symptom.

Most people with these issues are constantly using topical solutions, creams, drops, and shampoos which may provide temporary relief but once you stop, the infection comes right back.

This is because you have to fix the underlying cause which is really the overgrowth of Candida in the gut that is leaking through the intestinal barrier and feeding the infection from the inside. Otherwise treating the infection from the outside isnt going to work long term.

Leaky gut, also called intestinal permeability, occurs when damage to the small intestine causes bacteria and waste to escape from the intestine and into your bloodstream. This in turn causes an autoimmune response with symptoms ranging from digestive upset, chronic headaches, fatigue and rheumatoid arthritis.

Additionally, leaky gut can lead to poor nutrient absorption. Because your digestive tract plays an important role in regulating your mood, avoiding leaky gut trigger foods can also give you more energy and help to manage the symptoms of depression and other related mood disorders.

Avoid All Grains And Legumes For The Next Month

Life without any grains or legumes whatsoever can be tough. Whenever you plan a meal that is just meat/fish and vegetables it can feel like something is missing.

But if youre suffering from leaky gut and are really motivated to repair it fast, then leaving grains and legumes off the table, at least temporarily, is a no brainer. Especially GMO grains, which by design are the highest in anti-nutrients like lectins7,8.

Now, I will say, most grains & legumes dont quite irritate the gut lining as bad as those with gluten , but they are still loaded with anti-nutrients like lectins and phytates9,10, which your digestive system simply cant necessarily handle when it is in already poor shape.

Once the 30 days are up, start reintroducing one food at a time from levels 3 & 4 and in small amounts, eg half an apple, not a full one.

I personally add one new food every 3 days, as that gives me enough time to see if there are any delayed symptoms.

Bring the foods that dont cause a reaction back into your normal diet and ditch the ones that still dont play well.

    Supporting A Healthy Gut Microbiome

Diet is the single biggest influence on gut microbiota composition. In fact, diet is directly responsible for more than 60% of the variation in bacterial species in the gut. So, eating the right foods can support the growth of good bacteria, while suppressing the growth of bad bacteria.

We know that inadequate fiber intake, high intake of omega-6 polyunsaturated fats , high intake of saturated fat and low levels of vitamin D all cause a shift in the gut microbiota from probiotic to commensal, opportunitistic and pathogenic strains. In particular, inadequate fiber tends to shift the population of gut bacteria from majority Gram-positive strains to more Gram-negative strains .; High omega-6 fat intake depletes growth of both;Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes phyla.; And, high saturated fat intake skews microbiota unfavorably towards more Bilophila, Turicibacter, and Bacteroides. Vitamin D deficiency leads to shift toward pathogenic bacteria , whereas supplementation restores levels of probiotic bacteria .
