Does Zoloft Cause Diarrhea

by Med-World | Mar 8, 2016 | Learning Center

Dear Pharmacist,

I started taking Zoloft recently and have been experiencing diarrhea ever since. Are the two related?

Dear Reader,

The two can certainly be related. Zoloft increases the amount of serotonin in your body, with the desired outcome to be elevated mood. However serotonin also affects the rate at which food travels through your intestine. If any drug in the same class as Zoloft is started at too high of dose to fast then your digestive system can be overwhelmed with serotonin level changes, causing you to experience loose stools. There can also be additional concerns to starting at too high of a dose with these medications. Ideally we would start low, and increase the dose over time. I would recommend you call your doctor to discuss titrating the dose of your Zoloft. By starting at a lower dose and slowly increasing over time, the loose stools should subside to the point you dont even remember there was a problem.

Studies Show Klonopin And Xanax May Impair Immune System

The benzodiazepines are a class of drugs typically prescribed for the treatment of anxiety or chronic seizure. They work by slowing the electrical activity in the brain, resulting in a sedative effect. Doctors may prescribe these drugs for brief or prolonged periods, or simply as neededsuch as in the event of a panic attack. The potential adverse effects of benzodiazepines are fairly well understood by the medical community. People may experience drowsiness, headache, dizziness, and an unsteady feeling. High doses have an intoxicating effect similar to alcohol consumption.

However, the effect of chronic low doses of medications like Xanax and Klonopin on human tissue and organs is still to be determined. Previous studies have suggested that long-term administration of benzodiazepines may weaken the immune system, although no conclusive evidence of such a link exists.

These results argue for more caution when prescribing anti-anxiety medications. Both Xanax and Klonopin appear to degrade the immune system in distinct ways. Overall, Klonopins effects were less severe than those of Xanax, but were still worrisome. Patients with already compromised immune systems may want to avoid this class of medications if possible. Otherwise, Klonopin may be the safest choice. In addition, short-term use of the drug is definitely preferable to a long-term prescription.

Xanax is a useful medication for people who experience panic attacks. The drug helps relieve the symptoms and reduce the frequency of attacks.

Some doctors prescribe Xanax for depression, but there is limited evidence to suggest that it is effective unless the person also has anxiety.

Clonazepam is also a benzodiazepine. Doctors use it to treat seizure disorders in both adults and children. It can help address chemical imbalances in the brain and reduce the number of panic attacks.

Taking clonazepam increases a persons levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid , which is a chemical that sends signals around the CNS.

A lack of GABA activity can cause people to become excitable and may lead to panic attacks or seizures. Having more GABA activity in the body helps reduce instances of panic attacks and seizures.

Pickle Juice Can Help You Recover After Exercise

Electrolytes help maintain the fluid balance in your body and keep all systems firing. But when you sweat, you risk losing too many. The antidote?

Pickle juice contains electrolytes in the form of a lot of sodium and some potassium and magnesium. Thats why you can use it as a natural electrolyte, says Skoda. It can help to rehydrate after exercise.

To get the most benefit, Skoda says to choose a vinegar-based pickle without yellow dye and preservatives. Using pickle juice as an electrolyte may work well for people who:

  • Have a chronic condition that requires you to take in more sodium.
  • Dont get enough sodium in their diet.

But using pickle juice as your go-to recovery drink isnt for everyone. The recommendation is to have no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium each day. And 3 ounces of pickle juice gives you 900 mg right there, depending on the brand, she says. You can find electrolyte supplements that only have 150 mg of sodium and more potassium and magnesium instead.

What Causes Diarrhea Immediately After Eating

What Are the Causes of Chronic Diarrhea

If youve ever had to run to the toilet after eating, youve experienced acute diarrhea. Although there are a number of possible causes, including malabsorption, intolerances to foods like dairy, and chronic conditions like irritable bowel syndrome , its likely that this type of diarrhea is caused by food poisoning or a virus, per the National Institutes of Health .

Food poisoning is the result of ingesting food or water contaminated with bacteria, the NIH notes. Food poisoning symptoms appear between hours and days after ingesting contaminated food, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . Illnesses like norovirus and viral gastroenteritis, commonly called the stomach flu, can also cause acute diarrhea symptoms can appear between 12 hours and 10 days after exposure to a virus, depending on the strain, the NIH explains.

How To Reduce Your Risk For Future Symptoms

If you take steps to help your body adjust to the medication, you may be able to reduce your risk of side effects. You should:

  • Get adequate sleep. When youre well rested, youre less likely to be emotional and can think more clearly. Both of these tasks are difficult without sleep, but when you add in the effects of a Xanax hangover, they can be nearly impossible. Go to bed early the night you take Xanax, and plan to sleep later so you can sleep through some of the hangover symptoms.
  • Take Xanax as prescribed. You shouldnt take more or less than your prescribed dose without consulting your doctor. Never mix Xanax with other medicines, recreational drugs, or alcohol. The risk for negative interactions is high with this medication.
  • Limit caffeine. Your first instinct may be to pour a tall cup of coffee or soda, but these caffeinated drinks can cause jitteriness and anxiety. This will work against the intended effects of the Xanax, so limit your intake of caffeine until your body has adjusted to the medication.

What Are Benzodiazepines

Physicians prescribe benzodiazepines to treat insomnia, anxiety and seizures. These medications increase the effect that the neurotransmitter known as gamma-aminobutyric acid or GABA has on the brain. For example, when the patient is experiencing anxiety, the brain is being overstimulated. Benzodiazepines cause the brain to send signals that reduce this increased brain activity. When this occurs, the patient doesnt feel as anxious.

The several types of benzodiazepines include the following:

  • Ativan or lorazepam
  • Xanax or alprazolam

What Causes Benzo Belly

With a benzodiazepine dependence, if drug use is stopped, the body must adjust to not having the drug present all the time. This adjustment process is what creates uncomfortable symptoms in the stomach, or benzo belly.

For most substances, withdrawal symptoms last one or two weeks after taking the last dose. Benzodiazepines are known for having long post-acute withdrawal symptoms , or protracted withdrawal.

Benzo belly itself usually begins in the protracted withdrawal phase. It may continue for several weeks after the last dose of a benzodiazepine. Symptoms usually get better with time, but may last a year or more for some people.

How To Manage It

Getting help for anxiety can make a big difference in both mental and physical symptoms. Talking to a mental health professional is a good first step.

A therapist can help you find the treatment that best fits your needs, whether its therapy or a combination of therapy and medication. Some people who experience GI symptoms and anxiety or depression find that antidepressants help with both sets of symptoms.

Certain lifestyle changes could also help you manage symptoms of anxiety. Some tips that may be especially helpful for diarrhea and other stomach issues include:

  • avoiding alcohol and tobacco

Its also important to know how to cope with anxiety and stress as you experience it. If youre working with a therapist, they can help you explore coping methods.

On a larger scale, it may also help to take inventory of your daily tasks, both at home and at work. If they feel overwhelming, set aside time to go over your responsibilities. Ask yourself if theyre essential, or if theres anything thats adding unnecessary stress to your life.

Can increased self-care or division of responsibilities reduce your load? Sometimes, taking a careful look at everything youre dealing with can help you find new ways to address challenges. If possible, involve a trusted co-worker or loved one in the process.

Enhancing Healthcare Team Outcomes

Alprazolam misuse potential comes from its pharmacokinetic properties of a short half-life, rapid absorption, and low lipophilicity. Compared to other benzodiazepines, alprazolam effects may be felt within 30 minutes and can last for about 6 hours. Alprazolam, taken in large doses, produces strong depressive effects, which may cause memory loss. Due to alprazolam’s many adverse effects, the nurse practitioner, a pharmacist, and the primary care provider must educate the patient on how to use the drug:

  • Discuss the specific use of alprazolam with the patient as it relates to treatment
  • Discuss possible adverse effects and immediately report signs of depression , severe fatigue, shortness of breath, severe dizziness, passing out, change in balance, confusion, memory impairment, difficulty speaking, menstrual changes, or difficult urination
  • Discuss to the patient how taking alprazolam may cause drowsiness and sedation, so they should not drive, operate dangerous machinery, or perform any other activity or task that requires optimal attention
  • Discuss the use of alcohol and/or illegal drugs with alprazolam increases the chances of life-threatening side effects

Alprazolam is in a class of controlled substances called benzodiazepines, which are central nervous system depressants. Benzos slow nerve activity in the CNS by increasing the effect of the neurotransmitter gamma aminobutyric acid . This lowers anxiety and increases sedation.

Other benzodiazepines include:

  • dizziness
  • impaired coordination

Older adults who are prescribed alprazolam should be started on the lowest possible dose and increased slowly as needed. This can help prevent some of the more serious adverse effects.
