What Foods Should You Avoid If You Have Leaky Gut Syndrome
If your doctor feels confident that you likely have leaky gut, they may recommend adjusting your diet to remove inflammatory foods that could impact gut flora, such as:
- Processed foods
- Foods that may trigger allergies or sensitivities, such as gluten or dairy
Additionally, the doctor may also recommend a low FODMAP diet. Usually, this diet is recommended for people with IBS or even celiac disease, but it may help relieve some of the symptoms from leaky gut as well, especially since there is so much symptom overlap.
Creating a diet rich in foods that aid the growth of beneficial gut bacteria is important as well. Some great options are vegetables , roots, fruit, sprouted seeds, fish, cultured dairy products and nuts .
Leaky Gut Diet Foods To Avoid
What foods should you avoid if you have leaky gut syndrome? Its essential to avoid or greatly limit allergens and inflammatory foods when following a leaky gut diet.
Foods/ingredients to avoid include:
- Unsprouted grains, especially those containing gluten note that sprouting and fermenting grains reduces phytates and lectins, making these foods easier to digest
- Processed foods made with added sugar
- GMOs foods
- Refined oils
- Processed foods made with synthetic food additives
- Conventional dairy products
- Heavy alcohol use

What About Leaky Gut
For those with gluten sensitivity and chronic autoimmunity, the digestion process can be greatly affected.
- Leaky gut is often present in those diagnosed with autoimmune disease.
- Many of the medicines used to treat autoimmune disease have gut damaging side effects.
- GI tract nutrition is often compromised in these people, making recovery more difficult.
- Altered immune function contributes to gut inflammation as well as an increased risk for yeast overgrowth.
How Is Leaky Gut Detected
Leaky gut is usually detected by food sensitivities. When food is allowed to pass through the gut into the bloodstream, our bodies often react with an immunoglobulin G response .
Immunoglobulin G is a type of antibody that the body produces in response to infection. Measuring the levels of IgG is an important diagnostic tool and can allow us to discover that the permeability of the gut is compromised.
So, by testing the blood for the presence of IgG, we can assess whether food may be passing inappropriately from the gut into the bloodstream. This can mean that even healthy foods we could normally eat without a reaction causes a food sensitivity reaction. Fortunately, when we heal the leaky gut, the food sensitivity also usually goes away.

If youve browsed the internet regarding digestive distress or gut health, chances are youve run across some form of gut health information. Today, research reveals that what goes on in our gut happens to impact our entire body. As Hippocrates said, all disease begins in the gut.
One of the conditions that is showing up more frequently in research is leaky gut syndrome, also known as intestinal permeability. Leaky gut syndrome is a relatively new medical diagnosis that thousands of people have embraced as an explanation for a host of troubling symptoms.

Underlying Causes Of Leaky Gut
Leaky gut is thought to be more of a side effect of other digestive issues, rather than a specific disease.
A number of diet and lifestyle factors contribute to leaky gut. Understanding what these are can help you take steps to avoid them.
Here are some of the possible underlying causes of leaky gut that need to be addressed to resolve it.
How To Make The Green Hulk Shake
- Grab a decent blender, something that can crush ice, and toss the 1/2 avocado, handful of spinach and lemon juice in.
- Then put a big handful of ice cubes in and fill with 14 oz / 400 ml water. You might want to experiment with the amount of water, as some people like their shake less thick than mine.
- Now add your green powder in, followed by any of the optional add ons. I personally add in all of them, unless Ive already eaten a big meal. And when I do this, I find the green shake keeps me full for hours as it packs a beautiful macro combination of clean protein and healthy fats. What a way to lose weight!
- Finally, make sure to properly blend it of course, to avoid any green chunks of food or powder dancing around your glass as you go to take your first sip.

Why Is Our Diet So Low In Prebiotic Fiber These Days
Heres a question for you: what three types of meals would you rank as being the most delicious, that you wouldnt think twice about munching on right now?
Did you say a juicy burger, a cheesy pizza and maybe a fat slice of chocolate cake?
That, unfortunately, is exactly the problem.
You see, these foods that make up a great deal of what we call a Westernized dietary pattern, are commonly no good for us16.
As happy as they may make your tastebuds, they are very low in nutritional value and theyre very low in the essential fiber youre now getting to know as being a critical part of your health.
Even many natural foods which are high in protein and nutrients, such as as grilled chicken or fish, provide you with very little in terms of the food you need to feed those friendly gut microbes AKA, fiber17.
Our diets are filled with refined, processed and fatty foods, and its for this reason that most people only get around 15g of fiber a day. Thats a far cry from the minimum recommendation to have between 25-30g of the good stuff18, which should include at least 5g of prebiotic fiber that goes straight to feeding our lovely microbes!
Increasing your intake of fiber is easier than you think. And it really is an essential part of health, with research showing without any hint of doubt, that meeting your daily fiber requirements can reduce the risk of multiple diseases19.
Every. Single. Day.
Avoid Eating Any Foods That Are Processed Or Filled With Preservatives Or Flavoring
I think we all know that saying goodbye to foods high in refined flours and sugars, low in nutrients and filled with chemicals, will help our gut health improve.
But I also understand that saying adios to these and hello to a diet focused on real whole foods is not a cheap exercise. But to be honest, it all comes down to what value you put on your health.

Leaky Gut Syndrome: 7 Signs You May Have It
May 8, 2018
If youve been around the natural health world very long, youve probably heard of a condition known as leaky gut syndrome. It sounds pretty gross, but its an important enough problem to consider. There are several leaky gut symptoms to be aware of, which is particularly important since leaky gut is associated with dozens of related conditions and diseases.
As more Americans are affected by poor diet choices, chronic stress, toxic overload and bacterial imbalance, it appears that the prevalence of leaky gut has reached epidemic proportions. The medical profession is just now agreeing this condition may even exist, which is especially shocking to me because intestinal permeability has been discussed in the medical literature for over 100 years!
Why should leaky gut syndrome concern you? Recently leaky gut has been called a danger signal for autoimmune disease. If youre wondering if you may be experiencing leaky gut, the first thing to do is access your symptoms. Keep in mind that its very common for people on a Standard American Diet to struggle with poor gut function and high levels of inflammation but just because digestive issues and autoimmune conditions are common doesnt make them normal!
The Complete Leaky Gut Diet Guide: How To Heal Your Gut
You may have heard of leaky gut syndrome before. Leaky gut happens when your intestinal lining gets damaged, allowing the contents of your small intestine undigested food particles, gut bacteria, and more to leak into your bloodstream, triggering an immune response.
Leaky gut is becoming more and more common thanks to food sensitivities, chronic stress, inflammation, nutritional deficiencies, and imbalances in gut flora.
The good news is that a ketogenic diet can help improve symptoms of leaky gut and the health problems associated with it. A high-fat, low-carb diet like the keto diet can relieve a lot of the inflammation and intestinal barrier damage that contributes to leaky gut.
This article will cover what leaky gut is, its causes and symptoms, how keto can help with leaky gut, and a few other ways you can repair your intestinal wall and get rid of leaky gut.

Cut Out The Foods Causing The Intolerance
The first stage, once evidence of multiple food sensitivities has been found, is to remove the foods causing the inflammation, cutting them out of your diet completely. In many cases, youll be able to return to these foods in the future when you have fully healed, but you cannot heal until these foods have been cut out. This why its important to seek medical advice and food sensitivity testing if you suspect you have leaky gut
2. Increase Natural Anti-Inflammatory Sources
Secondly, increase your intake of anti-inflammatories such as turmeric, curcumin, and omega-3 fatty acids. These natural anti-inflammatory sources will help reduce inflammation in the gut and allow the membrane to heal.
3. Increase Fiber Intake
Increasing the fiber in your diet by eating more fruit, vegetables, and whole foods can lead to a big improvement in your leaky gut. Fiber is a prebiotic that will allow the probiotics you take to flourish and build the healthy microbiome your gut needs to function optimally.
4. Take a Probiotic
Taking a probiotic will help rebalance your microbiome to prevent further damage. You can take too many probiotics, so increase slowly, over the course of weeks, and refer to your doctor for advice.
5. Decrease Sugar Intake
6. Consider Taking Supplements
Taking supplements can help your body get the nutrition it needs to heal. Here are some of the supplements I recommend to my patients:

What About Old Fashioned Food Intolerance Tests
My big problem with them is that they often come back positive for just about everything Ive already listed under the banned foods list above, as well as countless other good foods, and are often temporary intolerances resulting from the fact that your gut is hyperpermeable .
So instead of getting old fashioned food intolerance tests, I personally believe youre better off doing an elimination diet per the above ideas, healing your gut and then gradually and one by one reintroducing foods to see how your now-healed gut deals with them.
i.e. doing an elimination & reintroduction diet .
No doubt you will find it far more tolerant!
If you really do want to get tested for intolerances/allergies, then my best advice is to speak with a functional doctor.
They can work 1-1 with you to piece together your overall health history and current state of affairs, and from there decide what is the best leaky gut syndrome treatment plan.
But that said, always keep an eye on the economics of testing, because getting a battery of tests done, followed by a $1000+ bill is sure to cause stressand ironically more leaky gut.

The Best Gut Healing Diet
As you may have guessed, since leaky gut is so closely connected with what you put in your mouth, the most important element of healing leaky gut is your diet. To support a strong intestinal lining and help repair any increased permeability, you want to eat foods that promote good bacteria and fend off harmful bacteria, and avoid anything that doesnt agree with your unique body.
Everyones gut-healing diet will look slightly different, because each of us has our own distinct microbiome, but the best gut healing diet generally contains these foods and food groups:
As well as eating the gut-healing foods above, its important to avoid foods that can be damaging to your gut health. That means reducing your consumption of sugar, refined carbohydrates, processed foods, gluten, alcohol, and refined oils.
