Leaky Gut: How to Heal

At the biostation, our experts believe in helping clients achieve optimal health by bringing the body back to a natural state of balance. Weve developed a number of unique and specialized treatments to heal leaky gut, also known as intestinal hyperpermeability.

This chronic health condition causes high levels of inflammation throughout the body and has many uncomfortable symptoms, including diarrhea, gas, bloating and stomach or abdominal pain. However, people with leaky gut often experience no symptoms at all, or symptoms that they would never connect with a gut issue. If you want to find out if you have leaky gut, and heal your microbiome, we offer these options:

So What Is A Green Powder Drink

Well, it is basically a concentrated powder made from a collection of blended plants, fruits and herbs.

I personally drink one every day or sometimes every other day because it is such a convenient way to sneak in a few extra servings of veg.

One scoop added to a protein shake or fresh vegetable juice is simple enough and the body can easily absorb the nutrients, which is very important when your gut is leaky and thus not absorbing nutrients as well as it should.

To be honest though, this idea is far from essential when it comes to solving your leaky gut, especially if you are following the ideas above on what to eat and what to avoid.

Thats why I see it as more of an insurance policy.

And since good quality green powders can be expensive, definitely only consider this idea if you still have money leftover after buying L-Glutamine, digestive enzymes and probiotics .

How To Improve Your Gut Health

However, the research is limited, and many doctors still do not consider leaky gut to be a legitimate medical issue. Because of the work yet to be done, there is no standard diagnosis and therefore no standard treatment. This has caused some people to explore natural or alternative medicine approaches. However, there are doctors like those at Gastroenterology Associates of Savannah, who understand the research and its limitations, but are committed to finding a solution to the symptoms you are experiencing.

There is no one proven method for completely healing the symptoms of leaky gut. But there are ways to improve gut health which is known to be good for overall health. And taking action to improve gut health may also relieve symptoms associated with leaky gut syndrome. An important first step is to make sure to address any known underlying or associated conditions.

Nutrition is another area vital to the health of your digestive system. Eat a well-balanced diet that incorporates lots of fruits and vegetables. Foods with prebiotic fiber are also important to help protect the good bacteria in your gut. What should you eat less of? A Hint Of Truth Intestinal Permeability

In some individuals, for a variety of reasons, the physical structure of their intestines is compromised. The tight junctions, which control what materials the intestine absorbs, dont work properly, allowing larger substances to cross over into the bloodstream. This is known as intestinal permeability.

Physicians sometimes find increased intestinal permeability in those who have Crohns disease, celiac disease, in individuals receiving chemotherapy, and those who have a high intake of bowel-damaging substances such as aspirin and alcohol. However, intestinal permeability is a symptom of these ailments, not a cause it does not lead to anything more than inflammation of the bowel walls, and it is not leaky gut syndrome. Furthermore, research shows that increased intestinal permeability sometimes has beneficial effects, such as improving water and nutrient absorption as well as activating the immune system.1

The Myth: According to the proponents of leaky gut syndrome, bacteria and toxins enter the bloodstream through these defective tight junctions and wreak havoc throughout the body, causing bloating, gas, cramps, inflammatory bowel disease , as well as fatigue, food sensitivities, joint pain, moodiness, irritability, sleeplessness, autism, and skin problems like eczema and psoriasis.

Perform Some Breathing Exercises Before Each One Of Your Meals

Although it may seem a bit hard to do at first, remember that breathing exercises are the ones that help you better eat your meals. There are lots of breathing apps that allow you to take control over the way you breathe.

It can be a struggle at first, but as you exercise and try out multiple methods, at the end of the day you will experience positive results.

Breathing allows you to lower the stress on your body. Instead, you will get to focus on digestion, and this means you there are lower chances of damaging your gut.

Lets face it, a lot of people eat under stress, and this does tend to have an adverse effect all the time. Thats the reason why you want to focus on eating while having a sense of calmness because it is an essential part of a healthy gut diet plan.

My Gut Health Timeline:

Discovery: I began having IBS symptoms in 2011 but they were intermittent and largely manageablemostly they were annoying but not debilitating.

The Plot Thickens: My gut health began declining in 2015, then took a dramatic turn for the worse in 2017 and peaked in 2018. I was going through a breakup, was writing a cookbook, was over-exercising and under-eating and was constantly stressed.

My symptoms: I reacted to almost everything I ate, the worst being high-FODMAP foods. I had constant gnarly smelling gas , chronic constipation punctuated by loose, gnarly stools, low energy, depression, acne, persistent athletes foot and occasional hives. You can read more about this phase in my blog post, My Journey with Gut Health.

When my gut health was at its worst, I was afraid to leave my house. Anyone who has struggled with chronic illness has likely experienced an immense amount of fear wrapped into their condition.

Trial and Error: I spent 2016 through 2018 trying to heal myself through food and lifestyle by troubleshooting my own health using internet research . During this time, I went to an integrative health doctor, but we never uncovered the source of my symptoms and our efforts to improve my gut health were minimal.

Strategy #: Feed Healthy Bacteria

How to cure Leaky Gut?! It’s as easy as following the 4R’s. #1 Remove

Fibers and starches in our food cannot always be broken down by us. Gut microbes ferment and break down these substances for us.

In return, they produce invaluable substances such as Short Chain Fatty Acids , B vitamins, and Vitamin K2.SCFAs support healthy mucosa by promoting the production of mucus & regulating immune cell development locally in the gut .

Spore probiotics increase SCFA’s by as much as 40% – and clinical research being readied for publication demonstrates that spores also double to quadruple the diversity of other gut flora .

You can also support SCFA’s directly with supplementation. We use Enterovite to support SCFA levels in the short-term while working on more global issues of gastrointestinal health and microbial diversity.

In the absence of sufficient fibers & starches, healthy bacteria starve & microbial diversity drops. Yeast & opportunistic organisms also grow & take up more areas in the gut.

Importance of Adding & Maintaining Diet Diversity

Ancestral diets were rich in food diversity. It wasn’t until the advent of modern agriculture that our diets became less diverse.

Human ancestors consumed numerous varieties of plants, animals, insects, and roots and tubers. Now, we eat a much more limited array of foods in our diet. The modern diet is unnaturally high in monocultures of wheat, dairy, corn, and soy.

Symptoms are a sign that you are lacking the bacterial balance in your gut to ferment these tough-to-digest foods.

Do I Need A Supplement

According to research published in the journal Frontiers in Immunology, there is some evidence that probiotics can improve the function of your gut and even help reverse leaky gut, but long-term studies are still needed. There is not a single study to date suggesting that probiotics are harmful.

Probiotic supplements are more like a fertilizer that communicates to your existing gut bacteria. It can regulate the pH and cross-talk to other bacteria, increasing short-chain fatty acids which is the food for the gut cells and help regulate inflammation and the immune system of the gut, says Dr. La Vella. Transitioning away from processed foods and toward whole foods is usually enough to keep your gut healthy.

Herbal supplements may be helpful in certain situations, but arent necessarily a quick fix.

I think of supplements as medications there is always a risk and a benefit. I prefer to think about restoring ecosystem balance rather than supplementing to cover up a bad dietary or lifestyle choice, says Dr. La Vella.

Correlation Between Gut Health And Hormones:

There is a lot of science behind the gut-brain axis as well as how hormones and gut health interact. It makes senseif yout gut is in disarray, your entire body and immunity are effected. If your hormones are out of balance, your digestion is off, which can then create imbalances in your gut microbiome.

Ill allow the professionals who are articulate in such matters to be your educators, but I will point out one tidbit I learned that I found fascinating. It turns out that blastocystis hominis, which is the parasite I had, can be responsible for hashimotos hypothyroidism. Hashimotos is the autoimmune form of hypothyroidism, wherein your body attacks your thyroid, causing it to malfunction. You can read more about this in Izabella Wentz book, Hashimotos Protocol.

Is Leaky Gut Real

Your gut, also known as the gastrointestinal tract, includes over 4,000 square feet of intestinal epithelial lining that controls what gets into your bloodstream.

If unhealthy, this lining may be leaky with holes or cracks that allow bacteria, toxins, antigens, and partially digested food to penetrate the tissues beneath it.

That can trigger inflammation and changes in the gut flora , which could lead to problems within your digestive tract and beyond.

Although leaky gut is not recognized by mainstream medical professionals as a condition, its generally recognized as a symptom.

If You Like Spirits Then Make Sure You Drink Them Heavily Diluted

Spirits are not as bad as many think, especially if you drink them like I do i.e. heavily diluted.

For example, I typically order a tall glass with 400ml soda water, a shot of vodka and a fresh wedge of lime. Plus minimal ice. That combination is so diluted you can barely taste the vodka. And thats how you know youve nailed it.

Importantly, I never use pop/soda/soft drinks as a mixer due to the sugar content.

But if I get sick of mixing with soda water, then I will mix with something like kombucha43. This can be pleasantly delicious, especially if you get a little naughty and choose kombucha with natural flavoring in it!
