What Causes Gas And Bloating

How Candida overgrowth causes heartburn, GERD and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

The excess gas and bloating the stuff that makes you feel especially gassy can be caused by a combination of things. You may be swallowing too much air . But more often, the symptoms come from your bodys digestive system not working perfectly to digest certain foods and beverages.

Normally, most food is digested in your stomach and small intestine. Improper digestion here can produce excess gas in this part of your digestive tract. But food that you have a more difficult time breaking down also passes into your large intestine, where it ferments. This produces methane and hydrogen gas.

What Else Helps Ibs Nausea

A key foundational area to support when looking to address symptoms of IBS, such as nausea, is the central nervous system and the stress response. While we know that anxiety and stress often come hand in hand with IBS in can be a chicken or the egg situation. The digestive symptoms can make feel more anxious but then the anxiety is triggering or worsening the symptoms in the gut. . This can be a viscous cycle. Even if the stress feels as though its purely coming from the gut there may is still the need to address both areas. This is to calm the gut and to calm the brain.

One of the most well researched areas of the gut-brain connection in IBS is through gut directed hypnotherapy. This is a calming practise similar to a guided meditation which has been shown to be an effective treatment in digestive issues such as IBS .

Managing stress levels is also a key area to support in regards the food that we eat. The more stressed or emotionally reactive we feel, the less in control of our food choices we are.

Understanding Acid Reflux And Gerd

Gastroesophageal reflux is a disease that may cause significant damage to the tissues and cells of the esophagus over time. Its the chronic form of acid reflux.

GERD occurs when stomach acids back up into the esophagus due to a poor-functioning lower esophageal sphincter . The LES is a band of muscle that acts as a valve between the esophagus and the stomach.

The main symptom of both acid reflux and GERD is frequent heartburn. Other symptoms may include burning in the throat or a sour liquid taste in back of the mouth.

While occasional acid reflux is normal, GERD symptoms are persistent and typically require treatment to relieve symptoms such as coughing, sore throat, and difficulty swallowing.

Lactose Intolerance Rather Than Ibs

Upper Right Side Abdominal Pain And Bloating

If trigger foods include dairy products such as milk, cheese, or ice cream, the problem may be lactose intolerance, not IBS. People who have cramping or bloating after only eating dairy products should stop eating these foods for a period of two weeks to see if symptoms subside. If symptoms subside after avoiding dairy, speak with your doctor about the possibility of lactose intolerance. If other non-lactose foods in addition to dairy aggravate your symptoms, you are more likely to have IBS.

Why Are Ibs Symptoms And Pain Overlooked

IBS symptoms, or the pain associated with IBS, are often overlooked because they arent consistent from one person to the next. They arent even the same every time you have an episode.

Symptoms differ in the types of pain, discomfort, when the symptoms occur, and the severity. Patients may not think that they are in a high-risk category or that they are the wrong age or sex to develop IBS. Theres no definitive way to diagnose IBS. Instead, doctors use a combination of your medical history, a physical exam, and tests including sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy to rule out other causes.

What Else Can Cause Similar Symptoms

To make things even more confusing, there are plenty of other issues that can cause similar symptoms.

For instance, if weâre talking about acid reflux, stomach ulcers can present very similar symptoms. Gallstones can also cause pain in a similar area of your body, considering the gallbladder is nestled right next to the stomach. The sore throat and cough youâre experiencing could also point to allergies or sinus problems.

Symptoms associated with IBS can open up a Pandoraâs box of possibilities considering abdominal pain and changes in bowel habits are two of the most common symptoms when talking about gastrointestinal issues. For instance, inflammatory bowel diseases like ulcerative colitis and Crohns disease have a lot of overlapping symptoms, but are often also accompanied by weight loss, fatigue, and loss of appetite . Lactose or gluten intolerance can commonly be confused with IBS since the allergens cause similar gastrointestinal distress. If your symptoms are accompanied by rectal bleeding, it could indicate something more serious, like colon cancer.

What Does Heartburn Feel Like When Pregnant

Suffering heartburn in pregnancy is common, and is the result of a whole host of changes your body is going through. Just one of these is the increase of the hormone progesterone, which causes the lower esophageal sphincter muscle to relax, sending gastric acid up the esophagus and causing the tell-tale burning sensation.3 If you havent had heartburn before, be reassured that it is common.3 To help reduce the risk of heartburn and ease symptoms, eat small meals, avoid fatty or greasy foods, and wait at least three hours after eating before lying down.3 Always talk to your doctor about the right treatment for you before using TUMS.

Treating Heartburn Vs Indigestion

Both heartburn and indigestion may be treated with over-the-counter products, such as:

  • Antacids for mild, occasional heartburn symptoms. Antacids work by neutralizing stomach acid. They may be taken as soon as you experience symptoms, or before eating trigger foods to prevent them. Antacids arent meant to be taken every day, unless otherwise instructed by your doctor. Daily use can cause GI upset.
  • Proton pump inhibitors for long-term treatment. PPIs work by decreasing the amount of acid in your stomach, allowing your esophagus to heal.
  • Histamine-H2-receptor antagonists . These are also designed to decrease stomach acid, but they arent as strong as PPIs.

Ask your doctor before taking any herbal remedies for GI issues, as you may unintentionally make your heartburn or indigestion worse.

Occasional heartburn or indigestion is largely preventable. Prevention methods are the same for both conditions.

Here are some of the ways you can help decrease a flare-up of heartburn and indigestion symptoms:

These preventive measures may also help alleviate symptoms of chronic heartburn or indigestion, but youll need to see your doctor to help treat the underlying causes to help prevent further complications.

What Is Acid Reflux

Acid reflux may cause heartburn, and it may cause damage even without heartburn. The burning sensation or damage comes from acid rising from the stomach and irritating the lower esophageal sphincter , the valve that separates the esophagus from the stomach.

No matter if you call it, heartburn, acid reflux, or GERD ,some 35 to 45 percent of the population experiences heartburn, which is about 116 million people! Its also the most profitably treated symptom in America.

Because of those numbers, its almost considered normal to have reflux and to take drugs for it. However, it is certainly not good, and those experiencing the pain are definitely nowhere near optimal health.

Heartburn can be a sign of other problems and can almost always be treated without acid blockers.

How Does It Become Excessive

Excessive flatulence or wind passed through the back passage can be a result of eating food that is difficult to digest. It is also one of the symptoms of IBS.

Certain types of food, especially unabsorbable carbohydrates present in some vegetables, fruit and pulses, cause a build-up of gas, too. A lot of our modern diet contains carbohydrates, and over 500 different types of bacteria in the colon will try to break them down, releasing gas that we then emit as flatulence.

Pain Unrelated To Bowel Movements

In people with IBS, the criteria for diagnosis says abdominal pain should be related to bowel movements.

Many IBS patients say this is not always true. But for the most part, people with IBS feel like their pain has something to do with their diarrhea or constipation.

If you have pain you don’t think is related to your bowel movements, talk to your doctor. It may still be IBS, but it is worth looking at other possibilities.

If you have an IBS diagnosis but you think your pain is not typical of IBS, talk to your doctor at once. Persistent pain should always be evaluated by a doctor.

Learning To Deal With Gerd

Luckily, as I dealt with and began to better manage my anxiety with the help of therapy and delving into the theater as a distraction, my panic attacks began to abate. And with that, my heartburn mostly receded for the rest of high school and into early college. However, about midway through college, I started to again experience heartburn and reflux around the same time my IBS symptoms first manifested. Unlike the IBS, the reflux was more sporadic at the time, so it took a backseat to my IBS among my health concerns. But like my IBS, the GERD now seemed to have less to do with stress and anxiety and more to do with things like diet, sleep and other health complications.
