Probiotics Benefits + Myths | Improve Gut Health | Doctor Mike

You’ve probably heard of the benefits of probiotics to your digestive system. Maybe you’re using some supplements right now. However, you need to be cautious to ensure you’re using them correctly.

They should make their way from your mouth to your gut, while fully intact. Otherwise, they’ll all go down the toilet through your pee.

Choosing the best probiotic for you is the most crucial step when you’re taking probiotics.

The Supplement Should Contain A Variety Of Different Strains Of Bacteria

If you are taking a probiotic supplement to improve immune health, it is generally recommended to take the supplement in the morning. This will help your body absorb the live and active cultures more effectively.

When choosing a probiotic supplement, make sure to choose one that is appropriate for your age and health needs. Probiotic supplements are not regulated by the FDA, so it is important to do your research before choosing a supplement. Talk to your doctor or a registered dietitian if you have any questions about probiotic supplements.

Why Not To Take Probiotics With A Heavy Meal

Your stomach is a very smart organ. The more food you eat, the more digestive enzymes and stomach acid it secretes.

Also, the more you eat, the longer it takes for the food to move through the stomach. It typically takes about 4 to 5 hours for food to move through the stomach.

Taking a probiotic right before or right after a large, heavy meal means that the probiotic has to endure the acidity of the stomach for much longer before it can move to the small intestine.

Taking an antibiotic for an infection can kill beneficial bacteria that live in your gut.

Probiotics may be taken orally to restore any imbalance in the normal intestinal or urogenital flora. This is the rationale behind taking probiotics with antibiotics. Severe antibiotic-induced diarrhea can also lead to an infection with Clostridium difficile, also known as C. difficile, a bacteria which can cause dangerous inflammation in your colon .

Experts have hypothesized that If you suffer from stomach cramping, gas or diarrhea when you take antibiotics, adding a probiotic may help to lessen, or even prevent, these symptoms. The addition of a probiotic will also reintroduce helpful bacteria into your digestive tract that have been killed or had their numbers reduced by the antibiotic.

Should I Eat Before Taking A Probiotic

Taking a probiotic after or during your meal may negate some of the benefits of the supplement due to busy digestion efforts in your gut. But Dr. Asike explains that some bacterial strains are naturally more resistant to stomach acid, and can be taken with meals safely in some cases, multiple times a day. Youll likely see printed language on your chosen probiotic packaging that indicates its safe to take with meals.

Its preferable to take probiotics with a meal because your stomachs pH rises to around four after eating, which is considerably less acidic and easier for probiotics to thrive. When you take your probiotic with food, you create a buffering system for the supplement, ensuring that it passes through the digestive tract safely.

Aside from providing protection, food also supplies the nutrition your probiotic requires to survive, develop, and reproduce while inside your gut.

Probiotics taken with a meal or even within 30 minutes of eating something survived in considerably higher numbers than those taken 30 minutes after a meal, according to a study published in the journal Beneficial Microbes. The pH of your stomach returns to an acidic state around half an hour after you eat .

Probiotics taken with food containing healthy fats had the best survival rates, according to the study, so the scientists advised that the meal you take your probiotics with include some fat.

Threats To Probiotics In The Stomach

Benefits Of Probiotics, Probiotics For Women

Probiotics are live microorganisms which when targeting the small and large intestines must pass through harsh stomach acids.

Stomach acids aid in digestion of carbohydrates and proteins but also kill pathogens and viruses that may travel along with foods and beverages. They do have a purpose. Unfortunately, acids also kill beneficial microorganisms, depending on the type. Acidity is measured in pH values. The human digestive system has variable pH levels: The stomach has a pH of 13, whereas the small and large intestines have pH ranges from 6-7.

It is suggested then that probiotics should pass through the inhospitable environment as fast as possible. Taking a probiotic with food or a meal may slow that passage, killing more probiotics. But a meal can also increase the pH of the stomach, giving probiotics safer passage. On the other hand, a meal may also trigger digestive enzyme and bile salt production, affecting probiotic viability.

Thus, whether to take a probiotic supplement with a meal or on an empty stomach thereby pinpointing a time of day has been a subject of debate. Note that newer research uses simulated models of the GI tract rather than test tubes, which show better survival rates of probiotic bacteria than in test tubes.

How Should I Take Probiotics

Written By Michael Greger M.D. FACLM on January 2, 2014

Foods appear to be better carriers for probiotics than supplements, but if one chooses to go with the supplement route, should they be taken before, during, or after meals?

The package labeling on probiotic supplements is often confusing. Sometimes the consumer is instructed to take the probiotics with meals, sometimes before or after meals, and occasionally on an empty stomach. I was surprised to find so few actual data in the scientific literature concerning this topic, but that is par for the course for most dietary supplement advice. See, for example, my video series about how little pharmacists and natural food store employees know:

The lack of information on how to take probiotics has led to serious confusion, both for the industry and the consumer. Surprisingly it doesnt appear as if any studies had ever examined this questionuntil now.

What did they find? Like vitamin D supplements, which should also probably be taken with meals for maximum efficacy , probiotic bacterial survival was best when provided within 30 minutes before or simultaneously with a meal or beverage that contained some fat content.

Probiotics On An Empty Stomach

According to a December 2011 study in the Beneficial Microbes Journal, people who take probiotics in supplements should take them before or with meals. If you take probiotics after your meals, smaller amounts may reach your gastrointestinal tract.

This essentially means that it’s fine to take probiotics on an empty stomach. If you want to take probiotics with food, that’s fine too. However, probiotic survival was optimal when fatty foods were consumed.

This doesn’t mean you need to take your probiotics with a spoonful of oil or butter, though. Even low-fat dairy products can help probiotics pass through your gastrointestinal tract. Other healthy fatty foods include nuts, seeds, avocado, coconut and fatty fish, which are all rich in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, as well as many other animal products.

Although you may have heard that the best time to take probiotics is before bed, this is rarely true. However, you could consume yeast-based probiotics, like Saccharomyces boulardii, before bed. The Beneficial Microbes Journal study found that this probiotic was not affected by food consumption or food type.

You should also technically be able to consume microencapsulated or enteric-coated probiotic supplements before bed. These types of probiotics are protected from your stomach acid and don’t require the other components found in foods to reach your intestines.

How To Store Your Probiotic

Can you take probiotics on an empty stomach?ð¤

Lets remember, probiotics are made up of living organisms, and as such, they will survive longer when kept in a cool, dry environment. Your kitchen or bathroom cabinet is a good spot. Look for probiotics that are packaged in amber or dark color glass. This helps to protect them from moisture and light damage. And you may want to reconsider keeping your probiotics stored in your day-of-the-week pill organizer. We know there are some cool organizers on Amazon, but they could compromise the effectiveness of your probiotics, if they are exposed to light, temperature changes, and humidity. Best practice is to only keep a few days of servings in a portable pill caddy at a time. Refill from the bottle stored in a dry, cool, environment.3

Some probiotics need to be refrigerated, but if possible, choose a probiotic that is shelf stable, meaning they can be safely stored at room temperature, and do not require refrigeration. This makes your life a little easier, and also makes it more convenient for you to take your probiotics when you travel .

Other Factors To Consider When Taking Probiotic Supplements

In addition to the best time to take probiotic supplements, another important factor to consider is quality. Dietary supplements are not regulated by the FDA, which means that what is claimed to be on a label may not actually be what is in their product. For this reason, its essential to select a probiotic from atrustworthy and well-researched brand that utilizes third-party testing for purity and potency.

Also, keep in mind that some probiotic supplementsneed to be refrigerated to stay alive. Its important to read the label of any supplement and pay attention to storage guidelines and expiration date to preserve its potency for as long as possible.
