13 Tips on How to Debloat Overnight [on your period] | Beauty Within

PMS symptoms are different for every woman. You may get physical symptoms, such as bloating or gassiness, or emotional symptoms, such as sadness, or both. Your symptoms may also change throughout your life.

Physical symptoms of PMS can include:12

  • Swollen or tender breasts

Talk to your doctor or nurse if your symptoms bother you or affect your daily life.

What About Birth Control Pills

Your doctor may talk to you about taking birth control pills to help ease some of your PMS symptoms. Birth control pills help by evening out your hormone levels throughout your cycle. Some womens PMS symptoms get a lot better when they take birth control pills. However, the pill can also cause side effects of its own, and it doesnt help all women.

Is Weight Gain During Your Period Normal

Weight gain during your period is incredibly normal. However, the factors that cause the weight gain aren’t clear and can vary from person to person. We do know that hormonal changes around the end of the cycle can lead to bloating by way of water retention, explains Anna Druet, a former research scientist at the period and ovulation tracking app Clue. Other women may experience gas retention and constipation, as progesterone can affect the speed of digestion. Some women also experience diarrhea, which is caused by the same hormone-like lipids that make the uterus cramp during menstruation, she explains. Each of these GI issues can result in bloating and, thankfully temporary, weight gain.

Tracking Digestion Throughout Your Cycle

Tracking your digestion can help you to keep an overview of your gastrointestinal experiences throughout your cycle. Reporting your experiences and discomforts to your healthcare provider from memory often does not end up reflecting the true condition of your health. Tracking your diet and experiences daily and over a longer period of time helps you and your healthcare provider analyze patterns. When does your stool change or when is your abdominal pain worse? Is there a relationship between your menstrual cycle, levels of stress, and eating habits?

Since every person is different, tracking is essential to get the best insight into your specific patterns. When you better understand your individual patterns, you can anticipate when during your cycle you can expect diarrhea or abdominal pain, and take steps to ease your discomfort.

If you continue tracking while adjusting your eating habits or physical activity, youâll get immediate feedback as to whether these changes actually improve your period experiences.

Track with Clue to learn how your digestion and stool are affected by your menstrual cycle.

Breakthrough Bleeding Can Happen

Let’s get the bad stuff out of the way first: The main problem with skipping your period is breakthrough bleeding, according to a review by the Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine. That means you might bleed or have spotting at unpredictable times, which can be a huge inconvenience if you’re out on a date, or anywhere you don’t have access to liners or pads.

Fortunately, that might not be an enduring problem, because according to the Mayo Clinic it’s more common to experience breakthrough bleeding during the first few months of menstrual suppression. After that, you shouldn’t have to worry about it as much.

Other than breakthrough bleeding, neither site lists any known disadvantages to skipping your period, other than the side effects you would experience on hormonal birth control anyway. The Mayo Clinic, however, notes that not all doctors think it’s a good idea to skip periods. The Cleveland Clinic researchers acknowledge the same, though they note that that’s due to enduring myths and misperceptions about menstrual suppression.

7 Min Stretches To Ease Period Cramps & Help Bloating | Relaxing Stretching Routine | Daniela Suarez

If your period always shows up during truly inconvenient times, Sydney Sweeney can likely relate. The Euphoria star recently told Cosmopolitan about a time when she started her period on the day of a lingerie shoot, revealing the internet hack she tried to stop her flow. And it’s a solid reminder that not every health hack you see online is safe to try IRL.

Sweeney, who serves as the magazine’s , shared that she started her period hours before the sexy shoot. “I did not want to put a tampon in because I didn’t want to be bloated in the photos,” she admitted. “I googled that you could take, like, three or four pills of birth control and mix it with Advil or Tylenol and it’ll make you stop your period.”

An hour later, she “started feeling dizzy and nauseous. I was like, ‘Fuck, maybe I need to eat something.’ I had a muffin and it did not make me feel good. All of a sudden, I threw up in the middle of this shoot, everywhere.” Unfortunately, she left the shoot early, feeling ill from being “jacked on so many different hormones.” Of the whole scenario, she told Cosmopolitan, “I was a mess. I felt so embarrassed.”

While Sweeney’s attempt to halt her period makes sense , you’re probably wondering if her tactics are actually legit and odds are you’re not alone. So, Shape tapped three doctors to help shed some light on the actress’ experiences , determine whether the Google-able health advice is safe, and how you can safely delay your period if you need to.

How Do You Know What Causes Bloating

It might be as simple as eating too much too fast, or you could have a food intolerance or other condition that causes gas and digestive contents to build up. Your menstrual cycle is another common cause of temporary bloating. Sometimes a bloated stomach can indicate a more serious medical condition.

Things To Do To Ease Period Bloating

Drink lots of water

As above, drinking enough water is key here. “On the days leading up to your period, make sure youre increasing your water intake,” advises Dr Chichi. Drinking lots of water while youre bloated may seem a bit odd, but actually, it will help get your digestive system moving and prevent wind and constipation, it will also help to flush out any excess water and sodium, and reduce swelling. Sounds easy enough, right?

Increase your physical activity

Again, probably not something that’d spring to mind, but this is also key. Dr Chichi explains that exercise can help with all symptoms of premenstrual syndrome , but particularly any pains, cramps, or discomfort around your digestive system. “Dont underestimate how effective exercise can be for bloating,” he shares. “It helps to expel gas and get your digestion working normally.”

Visit a GP

If lifestyle changes arent working for you, Dr Chichi points out that there is the option of the contraceptive pill. “The pill can reduce PMS symptoms, such as period bloating, but its about finding one that suits you and it may not work for everyone”.

Do note here: some women find that bloating is a side effect of the pill, however, for other women it can help. If at all interested, it’s worth booking an appointment with your GP for some expert advice.

How To Get Rid Of Period Bloating

If youre feeling puffy and bloated, foods that contain potassium, like bananas and dark leafy greens, may help reduce water retention. They do this by counteracting high levels of sodium in the body.

Consuming lots of salty foods can make water retention worse.

Reducing the intake of refined sugars is also an important step for reducing period bloating. High-sugar foods encourage the pancreas to release a hormone called insulin, which can lead to water retention and bloating.

And So Is Progesterone

Why Do I Get So Bloated During And After My Period?

As you know, progesterone levels will start rising and peak in the days before your period. As it happens, progesterone also has an effect on your intestines by either causing reduced bowel motility, like oestrogen, which translates into flatulence, bloating and constipation, or by causing diarrhoea. We know, why cant our hormones give us a break, right? But thats not all. High levels of progesterone can also trigger liquid retention which cause further bloating.

Causes Of Menstrual And Pms Bloating:

Bloating during a womans menstrual cycle is a fairly common occurrence, but why and when does it happen? When does bloating go away after period?

There are multiple stages in a womans cycle and they are:

  • Pre Menstrual Disorder last for 2-3 weeks and can have some bloating involved.
  • Stage 1 Follicular estrogen levels skyrocket as the uterine lining thickens and bloating is stronger as ovulation occurs in the stage.
  • Stage 2 Luteal there is not at much in this stage as progesterone is produced in higher quantities
  • Period Bleeding shedding of the excess fluid along with blood and tissue as the bloat is relieved in this stage
  • Post Menstrual
  • Menopausal Bloating bloat can return due to hormonal fluctuations
  • Bloating normally occurs in the pre menstrual or pms stage, follicular and period stages. What is called period bloating is actually fluid retention and results in a feeling of being overly full or being swollen around the waist area. It is quite often very uncomfortable, annoying and bothersome.

It is not the same as menstrual cramping nor is it responsible for other menstrual symptoms such as mood swings, fatigue, back pain, or headaches. Bloating is not a serious condition but rather a very irritating one that every woman wants to stop having. Bloating most often occurs during the pre-menstrual stage as a symptom of Pre Menstrual Syndrome.

    Severe Bloating During Ovulation

Although you can expect some gassiness as your hormones rise and fall, new or severe bloating can sometimes be a symptom of ovarian conditions such as cysts, polycystic ovary syndrome , endometriosis, or ovarian cancer.

If none of the home remedies are making a difference, if bloating persists through your whole cycle, or if you have any other symptoms like pelvic pain, bleeding in the middle of your cycle, changes to your period, difficulty peeing or pooping, you may need an ultrasound to check that there isnt something more serious going on. Your healthcare provider can help.

    Severe Pain Could Be Endometriosis

If you have severe cramping and pain during your period every month, it could be due to a condition known as endometriosis. This is often mistaken for PMS.

Endometriosis occurs when tissue which should be inside the uterus called endometrium grows outside of the uterus or near other organs. This not only causes severe pain and bleeding during your menstrual cycle, but it also can lead to painful intercourse. In addition, it may cause nausea and painful cramps prior to your period.

What Is Bloating Like Whats Actually In There

One thing people commonly mix up is the difference between bloating and water retention. They are often used interchangeably, but are in fact two separate things that can both happen in the week before your period. Premenstrual water retention is typically caused by hormone fluctuations, and diet can also play a role. Bloating of the period variety can be caused by hormones, but it presents as a gaseous feeling of increased pressure in the abdomen, even if there isnt actually anything in there.

How If At All Can You Safely Delay Your Period Or Ease Bloat

Thankfully, there are plenty of safe, gentle ways to ease period bloating or delay your cycle in advance if you, too, have a sexy photoshoot on the cal during your period.

When it comes to bloat, Dr. Gaither recommends staying well-hydrated by drinking lots of water the week before and during your period, as well as avoiding caffeine and alcohol both can trigger or exacerbate GI woes during this time. Another good idea? Eating as many fiber-rich fruits and vegetables as possible to help boost hydration levels and prevent constipation, says Dr. Jones. “The pre-period spike in progesterone causes us to crave salty and sugary foods, but they contribute to bloating.”

And yes, you can safely delay your periodbefore it starts if you’re on hormonal birth control pills by using a continuous hormonal birth control regimen or skipping the placebo pills, adds Dr. Roskin. The hormones in your pill actively suppress your fertility, so when you skip the placebo pills or take a continuous-use pill, you can avoid getting a period altogether or start it at a later date. Note that this should be done under the guidance of your ob-gyn, who can help you do it safely and navigate potential side effects, such as breakthrough bleeding, as well as making it more difficult to know if you are pregnant.

The TL DR here: There are plenty of ways to help ease your biggest period woes, but you’ll always want to check in with your doctor not Dr. Google before you give any of ’em a try.
