What Drugs Interact With Ondansetron And Dramamine

When to use Ondansetron, also known as Zofran | Must Know Medications (Nursing School Lessons)

Ondansetron

Ondansetron and apomorphine should not be used together due to sudden lowering in blood pressure and loss of consciousness.

Phenytoin, carbamazepine, and rifampin can increase ondansetron elimination and decrease blood levels, possibly lowering the effects of ondansetron.

Dronedarone can increase blood levels of ondansetron by reducing its breakdown in the liver. This may increase side effects of ondansetron. This combination may also increase the risk of abnormal heartbeats.

Dramamine

    What Happened To Mylanta

For many years, especially in the 1990s, Mylanta was a popular product used to alleviate the symptoms of heartburn. However, in 2010, the over-the-counter antacid was voluntarily recalled due to traces of alcohol being found in the product.

According to the manufacturer, Johnson & Johnson, the product was recalled so it could be relabelled with better accuracy, not because of any risk to alcohol absorption or adverse effects.

In 2016 Mylanta was reintroduced to the market and deemed safe to use as an antacid.

    • Bromopride

I took Cymbalta mostly for GAD about a decade ago. It wasnt generic and I had to switch because of how much it cost. Along with therapy sessions, it helped my depression quite a bit. Ive been having depressive symptoms more recently so I went back on Cymbalta 5 weeks ago. Its been a godsend and within a week, friends said my voice seemed happier and more in control. My doctor increased my dosage from 30 mg to 60 mg, and so far, Im getting my life back.

Are Ondansetron And Dramamine Safe To Use While Pregnant Or Breastfeeding

    Ondansetron

There are no adequate studies of ondansetron in pregnant women to determine its safe and effective use during pregnancy.

It is not known whether ondansetron enters breast milk therefore, it is best to be cautious before using this medication while breastfeeding.

    Dramamine

During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

This drug passes into breast milk and may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

When Zofran Is Given To Children

While many practitioners find Zofran helpful in the emergency room at preventing and treating vomiting from gastroenteritis, your pediatrician might not prescribe it on an outpatient basis. The current practice guidelines, including those from the American Academy of Pediatrics, don’t recommend using medications to stop vomiting.

There are no research studies supporting that it works in this situation as all of the studies have been done in an emergency room setting. If further research supports it, maybe doctors will use it more for kids with the stomach flu.

    Warnings For Other Groups

For pregnant women: There havent been enough studies done in humans to be certain how ondansetron might affect a fetus when the mother takes it. Research in animals has not shown a risk to the fetus. However, animal studies do not always predict the way humans would respond.

Talk to your doctor if youre pregnant or planning to become pregnant. This drug should only be used in pregnancy if clearly needed.

For women who are breastfeeding: Ondansetron may pass into breast milk and may cause side effects in a child who is breastfed. Talk to your doctor if you breastfeed your child. You may need to decide whether to stop breastfeeding or stop taking this medication.

For seniors: The kidneys of older adults may not work as well as they used to. This can cause your body to process drugs more slowly. As a result, a higher amount of a drug stays in your body for a longer time. This raises your risk of side effects.

For children: This medication has not been studied in children younger than 4 years. It should not be used in children of this age range.

All possible dosages and drug forms may not be included here. Your dosage, drug form, and how often you take the drug will depend on:

    • your age
    • how severe your condition is
    • other medical conditions you have
    • how you react to the first dose

    Diet and nausea

Many in the endometriosis community who advise about diet onlygo as far as suggesting what diet changes to make to help with nausea without joiningthe dots of the complex chemistry that is involved.

This is a miracle drug. Without it I would not be able to eat due to chronic nausea. For me the headaches are minimal and a couple of aspirin take care of it The trade-offs between weighing less than 100 pounds because I cant hold food down, vrs being nauseous 24 seven versus an occasional headache, the benefits far outweigh the negatives Other than constipation and the occasional headache which again, an aspirin takes care of, this drug has had no additional side effects

Patients with irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea suffer not only the pain and discomfort of frequent loose stools, but fear of incontinence. For many patients, that results in panic and anxiety.

In an effort to address those concerns, a team at Nottingham Diseases Centre, University Hospital, Nottingham, UK, conducted a study of ondansetron vs. placebo in a group of 120 IBS-D patients. The group taking ondansetron got significant relief from their debilitating symptoms, Klara Garsed and colleagues reported in Gut .

Compared with placebo, ondansetron significantly improved stool consistency, patients experienced fewer days with urgency, less frequent defecation, and less bloating. Pain associated with IBS-D did not change significantly.

Overall, 65% of patients reported symptom relief with ondansetron, while only 14% getting the placebo reported relief.

In the crossover study, participants received 5 weeks of oral placebo treatment and 5 weeks of ondansetron 4 mg tablets with a 2-3 week washout period in between each treatment period.

Loperamide was allowed as a rescue medication but needed to be discontinued for the final 2 weeks of the period. Patients kept track of their symptoms with daily diaries.

Are There Other Nausea Management Medicines Besides Zofran That Kids Can Take

In almost 8 years of working in an emergency room, there have been two main prescription medicines Ive administered for nausea and vomiting. The most common one was Zofran. It really works well!

Another similar medicine is Phenergan. Its more commonly prescribed to adults, so perhaps youre familiar with it. We mainly gave it to teenagers with migraines and migraine-induced nausea.

However, it isnt usually used with small children. In fact, the FDA states it should not be used at all for children under the age of two. Thats because Phenergan has the tendency to make you sleepy and can mess with your breathing to a small degree. Unfortunately, that small degree in small children is a big deal. So, Phenergan is a no-go for most kids.

In other words, Zofran is usually the first line of prescription medicine. However, if you dont have access to Zofran, there are some natural and holistic ways to manage vomiting. And these dont require a prescription.

    • One is by practicing deep breathing and mindfulness. This works better with older kids who can be calmed down when ill in other words, you may need to combine this with another idea!
    • There are also certain essential oils that help manage nausea and vomiting, especially spearmint and winter mint.
    • Check the over-the-counter area at your local pharmacy for pharmacist-recommended nausea remedies. One weve used and loved is quite literally flavored sugar water. And its delicious.

What Other Information Should I Know

    Chemotherapy: Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Constipation

Keep all appointments with your doctor.

Do not let anyone else take your medication. Ask your pharmacist any questions you have about refilling your prescription.

It is important for you to keep a written list of all of the prescription and nonprescription medicines you are taking, as well as any products such as vitamins, minerals, or other dietary supplements. You should bring this list with you each time you visit a doctor or if you are admitted to a hospital. It is also important information to carry with you in case of emergencies.

    Treating A Stomach Bug

Dehydration may become a serious concern for people who have the stomach virus. Watch for the symptoms of dehydration. You should seek medical attention if any of these symptoms occur.

Make sure you get plenty of fluids. Adults can drink fluids such as Gatorade with electrolytes, and children can also drink fluid replacement solutions such as Pedialyte. These drinks coupled with water will help restore the bodys hydration balance. For best results, drink a few sips every half hour to an hour.

Dont drink sugary drinks like Kool-Aid or sodas, as these liquids dont replace lost electrolytes. Taking in ice chips or drinking plain water is another good option for staying hydrated.

Once you feel ready to eat again, give your stomach a break by slowly introducing bland foods into your diet. These may include:

    • cereals
    • symptoms of dehydration, including fatigue and extreme thirst
    • symptoms of botulism
    • symptoms of food poisoning after visiting a developing country

If you have a mild case of food poisoning, it may respond well to rest and fever-reducing medications. If you have a severe case, you may need to be admitted to the hospital for intravenous fluid hydration. If you have severe bacterial food poisoning, your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic.

Your doctor will review your symptoms and run tests to determine the best course of action.

    Ondansetron

Some individuals may develop abnormal heart rate and rhythm.

    Alosetron

    WARNING

Alosetron was approved for marketing by the FDA in February, 2000, but was withdrawn from the market in November, 2000, because of serious, life-threatening, gastrointestinal side effects. In June 2002, it was approved again by the FDA for marketing but in a restricted manner as part of a drug company-sponsored program for managing the risks associated with treatment. Use of alosetron is allowed only among women with severe, diarrhea-predominant, irritable bowel syndrome who have failed to respond to conventional treatment for IBS.

    Common side effects

The most common side effect of alosetron is constipation. One-quarter to one-third of patients may develop this side effect. Severe constipation or intestinal inflammation caused by poor circulation of blood are rare but life-threatening, may require surgery, and may cause death. Therefore, alosetron must be discontinued immediately, and immediate medical attention should be sought if constipation or the signs of ischemic colitis occur.

Other important but less common side effects include:

    • nausea,
