Highly Effective Solutions For Irritable Bowel Syndrome
This gut-wrenching abdominal pain, accompanied by cramping, bloating, and diarrhea or constipation, doesn’t just make you feel miserable. It can create serious problems in your life, forcing you to stay home from work and say no to anything that means you’d be too far from a bathroom. An estimated one in six Americansand twice as many women as menhas irritable bowel syndrome .
Why it happens“The muscles in your colon that squeeze to push stool through malfunction,” says Philip Schoenfeld, MD, associate professor of medicine at the University of Michigan School of Medicine. The muscles either contract too quickly, giving you diarrhea , or too slowly, so you’re constipated . People may develop irritable bowel syndrome after a GI illness, a course of antibiotics, or emotional trauma, says Christine L. Frissora, MD, associate professor of gastroenterology at Weill Cornell Medical Center.

AcupunctureWhen people with irritable bowel syndrome supplemented conventional treatments with acupuncture, 49% got relief for up to a year from symptoms like pain, constipation, and diarrhea, according to a 2012 study. “We found that acupuncture is an effective IBS treatment when used as a supplement to more traditional therapies,” says study author Hugh MacPherson, PhD, senior research fellow in the department of health sciences at the University of York in the UK.

What Lifestyle Changes Can Help
- Exercise. Regular exercise is known to help to ease symptoms.
- Managing stress levels. Stress and other emotional factors may trigger symptoms in some people. So, anything that can reduce your level of stress or emotional upset may help.
- Keeping a symptom diary. It may help to keep a food and lifestyle diary for 2-4 weeks to monitor symptoms and activities. Note everything that you eat and drink, times that you were stressed, and when you took any formal exercise. This may identify triggers, such as a food, alcohol, or emotional stresses, and may show if exercise helps to ease or to prevent symptoms.

Excess belching can be the result of eating too quickly, drinking too quickly or drinking too many fizzy drinks. It can also be caused by nervousness, which makes people swallow a lot. The bicarbonate in saliva reacts with stomach acid to make CO2, which is then belched.
Excess farting may be due to eating too much fibre , or certain vegetables whose carbohydrate cant be digested by the human gut .
Extra-smelly farts are sometimes due to having too much fat in the diet. Fats may be broken down in the large bowel by bacteria, which produce volatile, unpleasant fatty acids.

How Is Irritable Bowel Syndrome Diagnosed
There is no test that confirms the diagnosis of IBS. A doctor can usually diagnose IBS from the typical symptoms.
Your doctor will check that there is nothing else going on. Usually this will include an examination of your tummy and back passage and some simple tests.
- Full blood count – to rule out lack of iron in the blood , which is associated with various gut disorders.
- Erythrocyte sedimentation rate or C-reactive protein – which can show if there is inflammation in the body .
- A blood test for coeliac disease.
- In women, a blood test to rule out cancer of the ovary, called CA 125.
- A stool test to look for a protein called faecal calprotectin. This may be present if you have Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, but is not present in IBS. A stool test may also be used to check whether you have any bleeding from your bowel.
More complicated tests such as gastroscopy or colonoscopy are not usually needed. However, they may be done if symptoms are not typical, or if you develop symptoms of IBS in later life when other conditions need to be ruled out.
How Does Ibs Affect My Body
In people with IBS, the colon muscle tends to contract more than in people without the condition. These contractions cause cramps and pain. People with IBS also tend to have a lower pain tolerance. Research has also suggested that people with IBS may have excess bacteria in the GI tract, contributing to symptoms.

Some Things Help Others Don’t
Although there are all sorts of tips and recommendations out there when it comes to IBS treatment, there’s a lack of good research in this area. Generally speaking, it’s fair to say that there’s no treatment that is guaranteed to relieve the symptoms. But research has shown that some treatments can at least help in some people or in the short term. These include the following:
- Dietary supplements containing peppermint oil or probiotics
- Certain anti-cramping medications, antidepressants and drugs to relieve constipation
- Psychological treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy and hypnosis
But research has also shown that these treatments particularly the medications can cause side effects.
Studies on the effects of have found that it doesn’t help in IBS.
Many other recommended treatments haven’t been studied properly so it isn’t clear how well they work. These include reflexology massage, enemas and changing what you eat for instance, more fiber or certain diets.
Try Guided Imagery For Pain Relief
Guided imagery is a technique that involves using the power of the imagination in an attempt to bring about desired changes within the body. Although there is no research specifically endorsing guided imagery for IBS, there is research showing that it has eased suffering from a wide variety of other ailments.
The nice thing about guided imagery is that it is a safe technique to practice. This is something that you can try on your own or with the help of a trained professional.

Medications For Constipation Or Diarrhea
Medications for constipation or diarrhea can also be used, depending on which of these problems a person mainly has. But there’s hardly any research on their effectiveness in IBS. Many laxatives and anti-diarrhea medications are available in pharmacies without a prescription.
If they don’t work, a doctor can prescribe constipation medications containing the drugs prucalopride or linaclotide . Studies have shown that linaclotide can relieve the symptoms of IBS with constipation. These medications may cause side effects such as headaches, abdominal pain, nausea, dizziness and blood in the stool.
All medications for diarrhea or constipation have the disadvantage that they may just replace one problem with another: Medication for diarrhea may cause constipation if its effect is too strong. Similarly, medication for relieving constipation can lead to diarrhea. In people who have alternating diarrhea and constipation, it’s important to make sure that the medications don’t make the symptoms even worse.

When working against you, your IBS and anxiety can spiral out of control while making even the simplest daily tasks seem like major chores.
The connection between your brain and digestive system is stronger than you may imagine.
In fact, there are more nerve cells in your stomach and intestines than in your spinal cord, and they are constantly receiving and relaying messages back to the brain. It follow that whatever impacts your brain, impacts your gut.
While careful food choices and eating patterns will help manage your IBS, keeping a calm and happy mind can do wonders for your abdominal comfort. The idea is to stop the nerves in your digestive system from overreacting. Activities that help you calm your mind and your muscles at the same time may bring even greater benefit.

Make Use Of Medication
Although medication doesnt work for everybody, it can be worth a try when other management strategies arent bringing enough relief. The most common classes of drugs to use for IBS are antispasmodics, antidepressants and antidiarrheal medications.
An antispasmodic like hyoscine can relax the smooth muscle of your colon, which should ease cramping and fight off spasms. Antidepressants are most commonly used to help with the abdominal pain with IBS, but only about 25 percent of patients report improvement.
Antidiarrheal drugs can be important tools when diarrhea is so bad that your health is in jeopardy, but since they can bring rather significant side effects, they should only be taken under close supervision.

Acupuncture To Treat Chronic Pain
Acupuncture is really good for constipation and getting the bowels moving again, Powell says. Acupuncture involves inserting thin needles into the skin at specific points to balance the bodys energy or life force, also called qi . Its based on the principle that qi flows through various pathways in the body called meridians.
Inserting needles into acupuncture points along meridians is thought to bring energy flow back into proper balance, says Anne Mok, an acupuncturist and the coowner of Cornerstone Healing in Brooklyn, New York. With IBS-C, acupuncture can help calm down the autonomic nervous system, which helps regulate your GI tract.
Acupuncture may even be helpful if you have IBS-D. A study published in December 2020 in Frontiers in Neuroscience found that acupuncture improved functional connections in the brain that eased symptoms of IBS-D and improved quality of life for patients.

Return To A Strict Low Fodmap Diet
The low FODMAP diet is a two-phase diet, and a scientifically-proven therapy to manage IBS .
The first phase of the diet involves removing foods that are rich in specific sugars that are likely culprits for IBS symptoms.
Once symptom control is achieved, each group of FODMAPs are re-introduced one at a time to identify which are responsible for that individuals symptoms.
Many consider the initial strict version of the low FODMAP diet their safe diet.
It is a good idea to return to this baseline diet during a flare to let your symptoms pass.
Try Peppermint Oil To Help With Gas And Bloating
Peppermint oil has been used as an herbal remedy for a number of ailments for centuries. Now the ACG acknowledges that this herb soothes the gut and recommends it to provide relief for all IBS symptoms. A recent meta-analysis published in January 2019 in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies looked at 12 different trials from three different continents, and found that regularly taking a peppermint oil capsule with meals helped reduce IBS symptoms, including abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloating, and constipation.
Its worth noting that peppermint oil could make heartburn worse so be careful how much you take. Talk to your doctor if you are thinking about trying peppermint oil, since IBS is a complicated condition and shell need a complete picture of the remedies youre using to determine an overall treatment plan.

Pain Medication: Know The Risks
Currently, theres not a cure for IBS or IBD. So to help manage the pain, pain relievers such as opioids are frequently prescribed. However, theres a lack of evidence that opioids can help in the long term and the risk for opioid addiction is high.
Common prescription opioid medications include:
Opioids can help some people feel very relaxed and produce a high, which is why theyre sometimes used for non medical-reasons. This makes them highly addictive. Overdoses and death is common in the street drug forms such as heroin.
Opioid overuse and abuse have created a crisis. According to data from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, over 130 people in the US die each day because of opioid overdose .
Other negative symptoms of long-term use range from constipation to nausea. If dependency occurs, withdrawals can include drug cravings, anxiety, insomnia, abdominal pain, and tremors .
Opioid pain killers can be very helpful in disease management but before starting them, its important to know the risks. Discuss these concerns with your physician and work together to create a plan to prevent addiction.
Learn What You Can And Can’t Eat
You are not crazy if you think that the foods you are eating contribute to the problem. There are two basic directions you could go to figure out your IBS trigger foods:
- Consider the low-FODMAP diet. The low-FODMAP diet is the only diet recommended by the ACG. It has research support for its effectiveness in reducing IBS symptoms. The diet requires that you restrict certain carbohydrates for a period of time and then slowly add them back to assess your tolerance.
- Try an elimination diet. An elimination diet involves avoiding all potential trigger foods for a period of four to eight weeks to assess any effect on your symptoms. At the end of the elimination period, you reintroduce foods one at a time to see if they cause problems.
There are also certain foods that can triggeror easespecific IBS symptoms. Learning which foods contribute toor relievegas, constipation, and diarrhea can do wonders for your everyday health and well-being.
