But some people still experience bothersome symptoms after following these steps. If this includes you, you may benefit from trying a special diet, such as a low-FODMAP diet, which cuts down on many IBS culprits. The American College of Gastroenterology recommends trying a low-FODMAP diet, noting in its 2021 guidelines that the diet is associated with a significant reduction in IBS symptoms.

FODMAP stands for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols. Together, they are a group of carbohydrates found in a variety of grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and sweeteners, but they are often difficult to digest.

Dietary Changes Can Often Help Ibs Symptoms And Sometimes Simple Changes Are All That Are Needed

If symptoms include bloating and wind:

  • Limit intake of gas producing foods e.g. beans and pulses, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and also sugar-free mints/chewing gum.
  • You may find it helpful to eat oats and linseeds .

If symptoms include constipation:

  • Try to gradually increase your fibre intake any sudden increase may make symptoms worse. Rich sources include wholegrains, oats, vegetables, fruit and linseeds. They help to soften stools and make it easier to pass.
  • Try adding one tablespoon per day of brown or golden linseeds to breakfast cereal, yoghurt, soup or on salad. Have around a small glass/teacup of fluid with each tablespoon of linseeds taken.

Does The Fodmap Diet Last Forever

Short answer: No!

After the various categories of high-FODMAP foods have been challenged, and your specific trigger foods have been identified, you do not have to stay on the elimination phase of the diet for the rest of your life. In fact, its better for your body if you dont. Many high-FODMAP foods still provide benefits to our bodies, when eaten in moderation.

Adjusting to your new normal will take time. Its a big change, especially from the mindset that tends to permeate our current way of thinking about food.

Many of the foods that are commonly believed to be healthy and wholesome and oh-so-great might not be great for YOU. Especially if you struggle with IBS.

Yes, fruits and veggies are important, but you might not be able to eat piles and piles of them. Even too much of a healthy food can make you feel awful.

Its all about moderation, information, and listening to your bodys signals.

Don’t avoid fiber if you have diarrhea. It helps protect your body against heart disease, by lowering your LDL cholesterol, and certain cancers, so you need it.

Simply eat more soluble fiber, rather than the insoluble kind, Bonci says. Soluble fiber stays in the gut longer, which helps the colon work normally.

You find soluble fiber in foods such as:

  • Oats
  • Green beans
  • Potatoes

Although meeting your daily fiber needs is best accomplished by eating the right foods, taking a fiber supplement can also help. Examples of supplements include psyllium, methylcellulose, wheat dextrin, and calcium polycarbophil. If you take a fiber supplement, increase the amount you take slowly to help prevent gas and cramping. Itâs also important to drink enough liquids when you increase your fiber intake.

We encourage you to eat a wide variety of foods and some of these suggestions might work for you. However, if these suggestions cause a negative reaction, then you should avoid them.

How To Eat Vegan On Your Low Fodmap Diet

Following a vegan low FODMAP diet is within reach, and it may help you finally work out the cause of painful IBS symptoms. Theres also strong scientific evidence that many chronic diseases can be prevented and controlled with a healthy vegan diet.

Often, people also have more energy, reduced inflammation, and they feel better overall after removing animal products from their diet. With that said, it is important to look out for certain nutrients and plan your meals, especially on a vegan IBS diet. Consult an expert IBS dietitian for guidance.

Typically, I recommend my clients stay low FODMAP for two to six weeks while their gut recuperates. I call this the elimination phase and it is the first step in the low FODMAP diet journey.

During the elimination phase, you should aim to exclusively eat low FODMAP foods. It can certainly be trickier to eat plant-based as many vegan staples are high in FODMAPs. But rest assured it can be done and I actually believe that eating a plant-based diet is the healthiest thing you can do for your gut in the long-term.

Watch Your Alcohol Intake

Going out can sometimes mean pre-meal drinks. Alcohol can still bea part of your plans, just watch out for sugary cocktails and mixed drinks.Stick to alcoholic beverages that are relatively low FODMAPS, like beer, red orwhite wine, vodka or gin. One serving is recommended.

If your IBS is particularly triggered by alcohol, its bestto avoid it entirely.
