How to Make Bone Broth – Heal Leaky Gut

One of the main bone broth benefits is for your gut. A cup of bone broth a day can help with leaky gut syndrome, but it’s also good for protecting non-leaky guts, according to Jill Grunewald, a holistic nutrition coach and founder of Healthful Elements. The gelatin in the bones typically used for making broth is said to help seal up holes in intestines. This “patching” can help ease chronic diarrhea, constipation, and even some food intolerances. Not to mention, it goes down easy that’s why dietitians recommend broth as one of the best hangover foods or for patients with food sensitivities.

How To Store Broth

Broth can be frozen for many months or kept in the fridge for about 5 days. Ideal fridge storage is in glass Kilner jars . If freezing, fill only ¾ full to allow for expansion and only freeze when the broth is cooled down.

Flexible storage

Freeze in ice cube trays for flexible use. This is ideal for when you need only a cube or two. It also means you dont waste any valuable broth thats sat in the fridge too long. It is preferable to use silicone or stainless steel ice cube trays. Storing hot, fatty foods in plastic containers leaches chemicals from the plastic into foods. These are known to be hormone-disrupting chemicals. Please avoid where possible. Only put into plastic ice cube trays when the broth is cooled. When frozen, transfer the cubes to a plastic bag for easy access.

Happy broth making! Your digestion will thank you.

    Benefits Of Bone Broth

Todays nutrition and fitness world is inundated with a plethora of diets and fasts for individuals to try. The differences between paleo, keto, and other structured meal plans can require a lot of research and discipline, and may not even reward you with the kind of health benefits youre looking for.

Thats why trying a simple bone broth fast can be one of the easiest and nutrient-rich ways to quickly boost your overall health and wellness. Havent heard of a bone broth fast before? No problem, because today youll learn about why this specific food has been used for centuries across a wide variety of cultures.

What Is Bone Broth And How Can It Help?

In its most basic form, bone broth is made by combining the bones, connective tissues, and basically any other unused part of an animal with aromatics like onions and garlic into a large pot of boiling water. The amount of time you cook your broth varies, with some die-hard bone broth fans letting their pot boil for several days to really infuse the broth with flavor.

The idea behind consuming bone broth is that the minerals, nutrients, amino acids, and collagen stored inside of animal bones can offer a plethora of health benefits. Rather than augmenting your diet in such a way that enables you to consume all of these beneficial substances, a bone broth fast simultaneously allows you to rid your body of foods that can cause inflammation and absorb the goodness found in the broth.

Chew Each Bite Of Food 20 Times Like Gandhi

Chew your drink and drink your food, Gandhi.

Taking a digestive enzyme supplement will help breakdown your food when it reaches your stomach and intestines. And I think you should definitely take them I know I do.

But to really give your gut a helping hand , you should basically pulverize your food in your mouth by chewing each bite around 20 times.

The more you chew the more it gets pre-broken down and the more digestive enzymes you yourself produce via your saliva glands85.

By chewing your food like this, youll find your gut is better able to process it. Most of all, your body will be able to absorb more of the nutrition86and your leaky gut will not be bombarded by so many large undigested food particles.

And of course, 20 chews per bite of food is just a rough average. So if youre eating something really tough, like Uncle Bobs well done steak , then up the chew count, eg to 30.

Interestingly, the collagen in bone broth can also help you build muscle and burn fat. The amino acid glycine is also involved in the synthesis of creatine, which your muscles need to fuel your workouts. In addition, studies show glycine protects against skeletal muscle loss and can help stop the expression of genes associated with age-related muscle protein breakdown. Glutamine can even boost fat loss and aid in glucose metabolism.

In Functional Medicine, we treat the root causes of your symptoms. Many of the chronic health issues plaguing so many people can be traced down to the health of their gut. When your gut is out of whack, the rest of your body follows leading to leaky gut, acid reflux, autoimmune disease, and many others.

How Can You Tell If You Have An Unhealthy Gut

Theres more than one way that your gut health can go awry, and more than one reason for it, too. Problems with your gut can range from intestinal permeability to dysbiosis and inflammation, and you may just suffer from a mix of all three.

If youre experiencing symptoms like as brain fog, inflammation, acne, gas, eczema, fatigue, bloating, unintentional weight changes, skin issues, and more, you likely have an unhealthy gut. etc.

Though there are a few different causes, the main ones tend to be:

    • Food choices, particularly excess sugar and carbohydrates, as well as intake of potentially inflammatory foods like gluten
    • Antibiotic-use, along with other pharmaceutical drugs
    • Toxin exposure, including from things like plastics, personal care products, non-filtered water, and home cleaning products
    • Infections like H Pylori

Dysbiosis simply means an imbalance in your gut bacteria, with too many opportunistic bad bacteria, and in some cases, not enough of the beneficial bacteria that you need in your gut.

When your gut is “leaky”, large particles easily pass through the gut lining, including particles that may not be safe, or that your body may view as foreign.

You want your gut lining to be selective about what passes through, which is where epithelial cells come into play.

This is where the epithelial cells come into play.

When theyre functioning properly, your epithelial cells help maintain homeostasis within your digestive tract and support a strong, robust immune system.

How I Cook So Simple But Healthy Every Single Day

    • Breakfast is usually simply a shake. This is how I start most mornings. Its easy for the digestive system to take, helps the body rapidly absorb much needed nutrition and is so easy to make, which means youll actually do it each day. Plus I always make sure my shakes contain some good fats, eg MCT oil or coconut oil, and protein, eg high quality collagen protein powder, which brings about some remarkable improvements in morning energy .
    • Soup and bone broth make up 20-30% of meals. Alternating between these 2 liquid meals throughout the week works a treat. You can batch make and easily freeze both, making them so convenient to take out whenever needed. And if you dont like the taste then just try a scoop of collagen each day.
    • Meat/fish + vegetable + vegetable starch . Simple combinations of the 2 paired with some nice flavors especially using herbs is just perfect. These dishes sit so easily in your stomach that they are seriously addictive!

First Things First: Know What A Leaky Gut Is To Fight It Well

The first step to healing is acknowledging what you have, and in this case, you may be experiencing a leaky gut.

What is leaky gut syndrome? It refers to the increased permeability of the intestinal wall.

To help you understand, heres a science lesson focusing on the digestive system. Many body organs comprise it and it includes the small intestine.

The small intestine is where most of the absorption of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals happen. Along it is the intestinal wall with small gaps that allow nutrients to pass through and combine with the bloodstream.

It also prevents substances that should not be part of the intestine from getting through. Sometimes, though, it happens, resulting in a leaky gut.

In reality, theres a lot of controversy about leaky gut syndrome as not all doctors believe it exists. Many studies, such as this one published in Gut, revealed that it does.

The symptoms of leaky gut syndrome can vary. Some of the common ones include the following:

    • Bloating or gas
    • Headaches
    • Joint pains

These symptoms are general, making the diagnosis difficult. You may consider taking the leaky gut test, which is a urine exam that some labs now offer.

Heres A List Of Popular Grains And Legumes To Temporarily Cut:

Healing leaky gut | How to make Bone broth | Anti aging collagen
    • Rice , oats, corn
    • Beans, lentils, peas, peanuts

Make sure you avoid all the derivative products too, eg soy sauce , eg hummus etc.

Then in 30-90 days time you can consider adding them back in and seeing how you respond. My advice would be to add these back one at a time so you can see how you react to each specific type of grain or legume.

Bone Broth Recipe For Leaky Gut

You can get bone broth right from your kitchen! It’s easy to make bone broth or gelatin .

First, go to a local butcher shop or grocery store and get ingredients such as beef, lamb or chicken feet, bones and joints. We strongly recommend grass-fed, organic bones and joints.

Second, follow this recipe to prepare and simmer bones in water in a pot on the stove or slow cooker, with other ingredients like apple cider vinegar and sea salt for at least 24 hours.

Although making bone broth at home is easy, it’s time-consuming and may not always be convenient to make.

Therefore, you may want to supplement your homemade version of bone broth with ready-made or powder.

So This Weekend Heres What I Recommend You Do

  • Buy 2 pounds of beef bones , including some with meat/fat/marrow. Plus some stock vegetables, eg carrots, celery, leek leaves .
  • Brown the bones off in a pot. Add the rinsed vegetables. Cover with water. Add salt, pepper and 3-4 tablespoons apple cider vinegar. Bring to the boil. Let simmer for about 12 hours.
  • Then once done, strain the broth and consume a cup of it every couple of hours over the next 2-3 days.
  • I typically only fast for 48 hours. It is more than enough time to get all the benefits of the fast itself and the servings of broth.

Let me just wrap up by saying, please speak to your doctor before undertaking any fast or any other leaky gut syndrome treatment in general.

Why Bone Broth Is So Good For Your Gut

Bone broth contains significant amounts of collagen, which has been shown to have beneficial effects on your gut in several ways.

To begin, your intestinal lining is made up of collagen, which acts as a barrier to keep the things youve ingested such as food out of your bloodstream.

When this lining is damaged by things like a bad diet, stress, or bad bacteria, leaky gut can occur. Food particles pass into your bloodstream and cause a whole host of problems, including immune reactions and inflammation.

Individuals with inflammatory bowel disease are likely to have lower levels of serum collagen, causing researchers to believe adding collagen to your diet could improve IBS symptoms and inflammation.

Studies show that amino acids in collagen, like l-glutamine, can help inhibit inflammation and repair the gut lining by increasing collagen synthesis in animals. This is major news for people suffering from autoimmune and inflammatory diseases that could be related to leaky gut, as the first priority would be to heal the gut lining.

Bone broth provides you with a hefty source of collagen and gut-friendly amino acids, which is why making it a staple in your diet could work wonders.
